Magic Peterson Sunshine is an indispensable compilation for the European jazz lover. It is the culmination of tireless archival digging by London-based DJ and audiophile Gilles Peterson, whose obsession with the German label MPS (née SABA) has resulted in this handpicked treasure trove of material. The label has near-mythic roots, founded as it was deep in the heart of Germany's Black Forest by the reclusive Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, a.k.a. HGBS, whose house concerts and personal studio captured and released some of the most forward-thinking jazz of the 1960s. With over 500 recordings to his credit, a catalog surpassed only by producer Manfred Eicher of ECM Records in Munich, this is the merest slice of one astronomical pie.

Tchaikovsky completed his last set of piano pieces about six months before his death. Each bears a dedication to a friend or colleague including distinguished musicians such as Paul Pabst, Vasily Sapelnikov and Vasily Safonov. The 18 pieces are no mere salon effusions; rather they are richly characterised, sometimes virtuosic, and perfectly crafted miniatures. Schumann and Chopin are deliberately evoked, the music embracing a rich variety of dance, melancholy, fantasy and bravura. The set is played by the brilliant young prizewinner of the Sydney International Piano Competition in 2008, Konstantin Shamray.

Tom Allen (Simon Burke) is a 13-year-old postulant at a Catholic seminary outside Melbourne. It is 1953, when boys still began training for religious orders in their early teens. Tom is constantly in trouble – for wetting his bed, showering in the nude, being late. He spends long hours in the chapel, praying for guidance, but his impure thoughts terrify him. The priests and brothers who teach him struggle with their own desires, and argue about the need for repressive discipline. Most of them, staff and boys, have doubts about their vocation. Through the loneliness, fear and shame, Tom begins to ponder his future.
