Beyond The Sea

To watch Dutch Harbor is to bear a kind of witness, for this independent documentary is an elegy; the poetic anthropology of a passing. As others before them, filmmakers Braden King and Laura Moya went to Dutch Harbor, Alaska – the most westerly point of the United States – to trace the edge of things and to move beyond paved roads toward blurred horizons of sea, sky and rock.

Admiral Harriman Nelson is a designer of the submarine Seaview, a glass-nosed research submarine. The sub embarks on her shakedown cruise under the polar ice cap as the movie begins. Upon surfacing, however, the crew discovers that the entire sky is on fire - the Van Allen radiation belt has been ignited by a freak meteor shower, and the Earth is being slowly burnt to a cinder. Nelson and his colleague, Commodore Lucius Emery, devise a plan to extinguish the belt.

Long considered lost, a print of this 1922 silent melodrama was rediscovered in a private collection more than eighty years after it first delighted audiences. Sam Wood (A Night at the Opera) directs Gloria Swanson and Rudolph Valentino–two of the era's biggest stars–in their only screen pairing. While on honeymoon with her wealthy but dull new husband, an aristocratic woman (Swanson) falls desperately in love with a handsome nobleman (Valentino) who sweeps her off her feet and away on a globetrotting adventure. After "The Poseidon Adventure", in which the ship got flipped over by a tidal wave, the ship drifts bottom-up in the sea. While the passengers are still on board waiting to be rescued, two rivaling salvage parties enter the ship …

Our journey takes place in Hokkaido Prefecture, the northern part of Japan. From Asahikawa Station surrounded by mountains, we head to Shiretoko-Shari Station, located on the Sea of Okhotsk and the gateway to the world famous Shiretoko Peninsula. The trains we ride pass through beautifully lit mountains covered with autumn leaves turning deep red and gold. On our way, we taste the unique local food, made with freshly harvested produce grown along the lines, and see people who have been waiting for coastal waters to become teeming with fish. We also discover a station that is in use for a limited time each year and a steam locomotive that has been preserved by local townspeople.
