A characteristically humongous (8-CD) box set from the wonderful obsessive-compulsives at Bear Family, documenting the Killer's '60s tenure at Smash Records. Lewis made consistently good music during this period, but the combination of his personal scandals and the British Invasion made him a pariah to radio programmers until mid-decade, when he returned to his country roots. Highlights of the set include the entirety of a Texas live show, with Lewis and his crack band rendering various early rock standards at dangerously high (i.e., proto punk) speed, some excellent duets with his (then) wife Linda Gail, and gorgeous renditions of standards like Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away" and Merle Haggard's "Lonesome Fugitive." Lewis fans with deep pockets should grab this one immediately…

Some critics have called Gonzales "the Latin-American Stevie Ray Vaughan," but a closer listen also shows bits of B.B. King and Carlos Santana popping up in Tino's Latin-with-the-blues style. Double Feature is a reissue of Gonzales' debut CD, originally released in 1994 on Remedy Records, with the previously unissued-in-the-U.S. EP Live at the Chameleon Club. Tino does a nice job on a pair of Ray Agee tunes ("Talk About Love," "Leave Me Alone") and covers of tunes by McKinley Mitchell, Howlin' Wolf, and old chestnuts like Jimmy Reed's "Big Boss Man" and Andre Williams' "Twine Time." But it's the original material here that impresses the most; songs like "Piece of Work," "Young Thing," and the title track end up being the shining moments on the studio portion of the disc…

The Kentucky Headhunters is a Grammy Award-winning American country rock band. It was founded in 1968 as Itchy Brother, which comprised brothers Richard Young (rhythm guitar, vocals) and Fred Young (drums) along with Greg Martin (lead guitar, vocals) and Anthony Kenney (bass guitar, vocals). The Young brothers and Martin began performing as The Kentucky Headhunters in 1986, adding brothers Ricky Lee Phelps (lead vocals, harmonica) and Doug Phelps (bass guitar, vocals) to the membership.

With the release of its 1989 debut album Pickin' on Nashville via Mercury Records, the band charted four straight Top 40 country hits. A second album for Mercury, Electric Barnyard, did not do as well commercially, and the Phelps brothers left after its release to form Brother Phelps. Kenney re-joined and Mark S. Orr took over on lead vocals for 1993's Rave On!! and a compilation album entitled The Best of The Kentucky Headhunters: Still Pickin' before the band exited Mercury. Orr left and Doug Phelps rejoined in 1996 for the album Stompin' Grounds, also leading on the Audium Entertainment albums Songs from the Grass String Ranch and Soul, as well as Big Boss Man and a second compilation, Flying Under the Radar, on CBuJ Entertainment. After Kenney's departure, Doug once again took over as bass guitarist. The Kentucky Headhunters has released seven studio albums, two compilations, and twenty singles, of which the highest-peaking is the #8 "Oh Lonesome Me" from early 1990. In addition, the band has won three Country Music Association awards and an Academy of Country Music award.

Internationally known harmonica player and vocalist WILLIE J. FOSTER (1921.09.19/Leland, MS – 2001.05.20/Jackson, TN) played with blues greats Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter, and others during the 1950s and early 1960s. Despite health problems later in his life, he toured often and performed in many countries. Foster always returned to his roots in Mississippi’s Delta region, though, where he was known as the “Godfather of the Blues.”…….

Allmusic:
This 1973 release was the very last collection that the Grateful Dead authorized during their tenure with Warner Bros. in the late '60s and early '70s. However, this live disc was a sort of melancholy affair, as it centered on material featuring Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (guitar/vocals/mouth harp), who had left the band due to illness in June of the previous year. History of the Grateful Dead, Vol. 1 (Bear's Choice) is somewhat misleading, as a follow-up never came to pass.

The Nighthawks were founded in 1972 by vocalist/harmonica player Mark Wenner and guitarist Jimmy Thackery, and joined early on by bass player Jan Zukowski and drummer Pete Ragusa. Based in Washington, D.C., they built on their Chicago blues roots to create a unique musical repertoire that features blues, roots rock, rockabilly and soul. They became known as one of the hardest working and most popular blues bands as they toured nationally in the ‘70s and ‘80s, playing 300 shows a year from the mid-‘70’s to the mid-‘80’s.

History of the Grateful Dead, Vol. 1 (Bear's Choice) is somewhat misleading, as a follow-up never came to pass. Band historians, however, claim that this release was optimistically titled because the label had hoped to issue a series of live recordings (a la Dick's Picks) containing highlights from a variety of vintage Dead performances.
