This Edition presents the “Magnificent Seven” and the “encore” in optimum technical quality. In the mid-Fifties of the last century, with the Cold War freezing relations between East and West, the English record label Decca decided to record a series of Russian operas with the Belgrade National Opera. Belgrade in the Yugoslavia of those days under Josip Tito was more open to “the West” than the Warsaw Pact countries gathered under the wing of the Soviet Union. The deal had been struck by former Decca manager and successful promoter of east European folklore in the USA, record executive Gerald Severn.

In 1915 the Hungarian composer Emmerich Kálmán celebrated what certainly qualifies as his greatest pubic success in the operetta metropolis of Vienna with Die Csárdásfürstin. For his next operetta, which beheld the light of the stage world at the Johann Strauß Theater in Vienna on 21 September 1917, Kálmán and his librettists Alfred Maria Willner and Rudolf Österreicher drew on a work that had already been presented with success in Budapest and had even conquered New Yorks Broadway: it was thus that Zsuzsi kisasszony (Miss Susi) or Miss Springtime (Fräulein Frühling) became Die Faschingsfee (The Carnival Fairy) for the Viennese public of the war years. For it the three authors came up with a plot that is set in Munich during the Carnival season and in the twilight years of the monarchies in Bavaria and Austria-Hungary issued its appeal for the elimination of social strictures and the guarantee of the right to follow ones own heart.

Often referred to simply as "The Hoff," actor, singer, and pop-culture icon David Hasselhoff has enjoyed over 40 years of fame for his starring roles in the classic TV shows Knight Rider and Baywatch. Along with his high-profile acting work, Hasselhoff has also built a loyal fan base as a pop singer, especially in Europe, where many of his albums, like 1984's Night Rocker, 1990's Crazy for You, and 2011's A Real Good Feeling, have found chart success. A globally recognized star, he has continued to work, often playing off his fame with a tongue-in-cheek attitude, such as starring alongside his daughters in the A&E reality show The Hasselhoffs, making a cameo appearance in 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and starring alongside Ken Jeong in 2017's satirical comedy Killing Hasselhoff.

He was born in Cologne, but it was in Paris that Jacques Offenbach achieved fame. A special feature of this 30-CD collection are star-studded recordings in both French and German of his most celebrated operettas – works that overflow with joie de vivre and satirical wit – and of Les Contes d’Hoffmann, an opera that daringly fuses fantasy, comedy and tragedy. It also includes irresistibly stylish performances of such tempting rarities as Les Brigands, Pomme d’Api, Monsieur Choufleuri and Mesdames de la Halle.
