Drummer Billy Cobham was fresh from his success with the Mahavishnu Orchestra when he recorded his debut album, which is still his best. Most of the selections showcase Cobham in a quartet with keyboardist Jan Hammer, guitarist Tommy Bolin, and electric bassist Lee Sklar. Two other numbers include Joe Farrell on flute and soprano and trumpeter Jimmy Owens with guitarist John Tropea, Hammer, bassist Ron Carter, and Ray Barretto on congas. The generally high-quality compositions (which include "Red Baron") make this fusion set a standout, a strong mixture of rock-ish rhythms and jazz improvising.

Jazz / Fusion / Jazz Funk

Features 24-bit digital remastering. Comes with a mini-description. A solid effort that has been dismissed based upon its associations with two Cobham lemons, Simplicity of Expression: Depth of Thought and B.C., all recorded around the same time. This recording finds Cobham continuing to explore the funk genre; however, the overall mood here is quite darker and more introspective, similar to Crosswinds.

This is a compilation of some 1970s LPs. If you like Weather Report, Chick Corea, Santana or Miles Davis of this period, you'll enjoy this one. At 8 tracks and just over 40 minutes, one wishes they'd be a little more generous. What's here is a pretty good mix of Cobham compositions though; includes two Cobham's fusion classics: Spectrum and Crosswinds.

This odd anthology from Atlantic reissues selections from trio dates recorded during the 1960s by Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, and Herbie Hancock, along with otherwise unobtainable early recordings by McCoy Tyner. Jarrett is joined by Charlie Haden and Paul Motian on two originals, both of which show the obvious influence of Bill Evans. Chick Corea is accompanied by Steve Swallow (on acoustic bass rather than the electric bass he switched to a short time later) and Joe Chambers. The pianist's "Tones for Joan's Bones" is swinging, but not nearly as driving as his works in the decades to follow, while his reworking of the show tune "This Is New" features Joe Farrell and Woody Shaw; both tracks also show the influence of Bill Evans.

The 16-tracks on this compilation are from Roy Buchanan's trio of mid-1970s titles: A Street Called Straight (1976), Loading Zone (1977), and You're Not Alone (1978). After a less than personally (or professionally) satisfying stint earlier in the decade with Polydor Records, Buchanan teamed up with Atlantic, who helped him get out of his pending contract with the former…

This six-disc set from Strawberry Records collects 12 of the great Mississippi-born musician's best-known albums from two important stages in his long career. Mose Allison's work for Atlantic with producers Nesuhi Ertegun and later Joel Dorn defined him as a downright virtuoso pianist in his own songs – as well as the many he covered – showcasing a signature style that perfectly wed blues, bop, and swing. His songs were delivered in a laconic Southern drawl; the originals offered hip, poetic, humorous, sometimes biting lyrics in insightful, often ironic commentaries on modern life, economics, and relationships, earning him the nickname "the Sage of Tippo." The first five discs contain two albums each, in chronological order: I Don't Worry About a Thing and Swingin' Machine (both 1962); The Word from Mose (1964); Wild Man on the Loose and Mose Alive! (1966); I've Been Doin' Some Thinkin' (1968); Hello There, Universe (1970); Western Man (1971); Mose in Your Ear and Your Mind Is on Vacation (1972). The final disc features his two outings for Bruce Lundvall's short-lived but important Elektra Musician label, 1982's Middle Class White Boy and 1983's live Lessons in Living. There are 104 tracks in all. Some of Allison's sidemen during the Atlantic/Elektra eras included now legendary jazz talent such as drummers Frankie Dunlop, Paul Motian, and Billy Cobham; saxophonists Pepper Adams, Seldon Powell, and Lou Donaldson; and bassists Red Mitchell, Bob Cranshaw, and Chuck Rainey.

In 1972, two years after the release of Robin Kenyatta's seminal Girl from Martinique outing for ECM, he signed to Atlantic and released another seminal bit of classy jazz-funk. Gypsy Man, produced by Michael Cuscuna, has a who's-who lineup of players who would be synonymous with the newly emerging subgenre of jazz: drummer Billy Cobham (still a member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra at the time), percussionist Ralph MacDonald, session drummer Rick Marotta, guitarists Keith Loving and David Spinozza, pianist Larry Willis on Fender Rhodes, bassist Stanley Clarke (who released his own classic debut Children of Forever the same year and played on two of Norman Connors now legendary dates from the period, Dance of Magic and Dark of Light), and more.
