Quando, poche settimane dopo, Joe Sistrom della Paramount entrò nell’ufficio di Billy Wilder ingiungendogli di leggere subito quel «thriller su una donna che uccide suo marito per riscuotere l’assicurazione», ignorava di avere innescato, oltre alla lavorazione di un grande film quale La fiamma del peccato, un’inesauribile vena di leggende.

The film was awarded an Academy Award for Best Costume Design, Black-and-White (Orry-Kelly) and was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Jack Lemmon), Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Black-and-White (Ted Haworth, Edward G. Boyle), Best Cinematography, Black-and-White, Best Director and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium.[2]

It won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Comedy. Marilyn Monroe won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in Musical or Comedy, and Jack Lemmon for Best Actor in Musical or Comedy.

The film has been acclaimed worldwide as one of the greatest film comedies ever made. During 1989, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant," going in on the first year of voting.

In 2000, readers of Total Film magazine voted it the eighth greatest comedy film of all time. In 2002, Channel 4 ranked Some Like It Hot as the fifth greatest film ever made in their 100 Greatest Films Poll.

E si potrebbe continuare a lungo, se non altro per spiegarsi il profumo di scandalo che ancora oggi avvolge questo archetipo del noir, che ci attrae allo stesso modo in cui il protagonista, pur sapendo che sarebbe più prudente "mollarla come un attizzatoio rovente", è attratto dalla sua dark lady.

Audrey Hepburn co-stars as the daughter of Parisian private eye Maurice Chevalier. Investigating the amorous activities of Cooper, Chevalier relates what he's discovered to cuckolded husband John McGiver, who declares that he's going after Cooper with a pistol. Overhearing this conversation, Hepburn rushes off to rescue Cooper. She keeps him far away from McGiver by adopting a "woman of the world" pose. Cooper quickly sees through this charade; still, she is fascinated by Hepburn and attempts to relocate her after she disappears. Meeting Chevalier one day, Cooper relates the story of the Mystery Woman, never dreaming that he is describing Chevalier's daughter.

An entertaining ensemble comedy about the extremes one man goes to circumvent Italian divorce laws, Divorce - Italian Style (Divorzio all'italiana, 1961) was a big hit in Italy as well as on the American art house circuit. Americans were undoubtedly drawn to the scandalous nature and then-steamy sexuality of its script, as well as to its thickly-lacquered Sicilian atmosphere - this is an Italian film full of exaggerated if funny Italian stereotypes. Criterion's supplements work to put the film into sociopolitical context, an important component of the film's and its director's reputation in Italy, but one generally lost on non-Italians.
