Thereafter, he made movies and records on a freelance basis. The immediate results were more felicitous for his film work than his recording, as he went to MGM for the successful movie High Society…

Harry Lillis "Bing" Crosby Jr. was an American singer and actor. Crosby's trademark warm bass-baritone voice made him the best-selling recording artist of all time, having sold over one billion analog records and tapes, as well as digital compact discs and downloads around the world. The first multimedia star, from 1931 to 1954 Crosby was a leader in record sales, radio ratings, and motion picture grosses. His early career coincided with technical recording innovations such as the microphone. This allowed him to develop a laid-back, intimate singing style that influenced many of the popular male singers who followed him, including Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Dick Haymes, and Dean Martin. Yank magazine said that he was the person who had done the most for American soldiers' morale during World War II. In 1948, American polls declared him the "most admired man alive", ahead of Jackie Robinson and Pope Pius XII. Also in 1948, Music Digest estimated that his recordings filled more than half of the 80,000 weekly hours allocated to recorded radio music.

Collectors' Choice's clever repackaging of Bing Crosby radio shows continued apace with Bing on Broadway, a collection of 19 show tunes, all of them recorded for his radio show between 1954 and 1956. A Bing Crosby radio show was not a place for low-quality material, though Crosby put time and pride into these songs, and although he pre-recorded much of this material, for that reason it doesn't sound radio-show quality at all. And the songs can't be beat either, with a program full of gems as shiny as "Crazy Rhythm," "How Long Has This Been Goin' On," "Ain't Misbehavin'," "It's Only a Paper Moon," "Come Rain or Come Shine," and even "Swanee" (the latter being one of the few songs here that came along before even Crosby's time). The arrangements and accompaniment are headed by Buddy Cole and his small group, which gives these songs an intimate feel often lacking in Crosby's regular studio sides.
