Iva Bittova is the acclaimed Czech singer/performer/composer’s beautifully self-titled solo debut for ECM. This unique work expresses the essence of Bittova’s craft and explores the deep relationship between the violin and her voice. The pieces here, modestly-titled “Fragments I-XII” resist definition. An idiosyncratic ‘folk’ music, contemporary composition, improvisation, any and all of these may apply from moment to moment. Her music is lively and revolutionary.

After a few years passed collaborating with drummer Pavel Fajt, Iva Bittová teamed up with Rale guitarist Vladimír Václavek to write and record the beautiful two-CD set Bílé Inferno (White Inferno). The singer remains true to her stripped-down aesthetics, keeping arrangements sparse, letting the songs show their power with as little embellishments as possible.

Hallelujah Anyway is an important retrospective of underrecognized and versatile cellist Tom Cora. A worthy eulogy, released one year after his death, this double-disc set includes songs written in his memory, songs that he composed for others, and a great cross-section of the myriad projects and musical contexts that Cora embraced. And that means a cross-section of all the creative experimenters and improvisers in avant garde rock, jazz, etc. spanning the late '70s through the late '90s. This collection includes some of Cora's solo recordings, as well as projects with John Zorn, Carlos Zingaro, Richard Teitelbaum, the Ex, Barre Philips, and the bands Curlew, Roof, Third Person (with Samm Bennett), the Chadbournes, and Skeleton Crew (with Fred Frith)…

This truly is the most beautiful album the Czech label Indies has released, in every way. First, the music: The result of a group effort, the songs are filled with haunting melodies, refined string arrangements (violin, viola, cello) counterbalanced by a visceral approach to rhythm (only hand percussion and shouts), and intricate vocal interplay among the five members, all singers.

“Aside from the musical direction of the projects in which Honzák appears, there remains, with a touch of simplification, much the same content, much the same view, which has not changed for years. And it doesn’t matter if we call it the desire to discover the unknown, the joy of freedom of creation, or the desire to inspire and be inspired.”
