Blair Singer

Janet Blair (1921-2007) was a big-band singer who became a popular American film and television actress. The 1959 album “Flame Out!,” marked her first appearance on record since her days as vocalist with the Hal Kemp Orchestra in the 1940s. Janet’s naturally beautiful voice and great feel for the lyrics, brought new light to some of the best “heart songs” of her era. All musical scores were arranged and conducted by pianist Lou Busch, who had also been with the Kemp crew. Through the adept use of orchestral sounds, he managed to engineer a change of pace between songs. Some have a light, tonal modern jazz background in a Mancini-influenced style; others, a strikingly beautiful string sound; and still others employ the sparse feel of a “blues” piano and a lonesome trumpet blowing “out there somewhere.”

Fueled by an unwavering work ethic, and refined and strengthened by growing up on a small farm, Blair Mathews' creative journey led to the release of his debut, self-penned country radio single, "It's About Us," on Stoneyhill Records. The song is from his CD released in the spring of 2014. Blair worked on the project with Grammy Award winner Chad Carlson, whose impressive credits include work with Taylor Swift, Trisha Yearwood and The Hunger Games soundtrack.

Gilded’ follows on from Blair’s highly acclaimed 2014 release ‘House Of Jacks’ and his outstanding debut album ‘Blight and Blossom’ in 2012, which saw him win the BBC R2 Folk Horizon Award. Blair is a story-teller, known for his cerebral life affirming lyrics and the new record fares no differently - ‘Gilded’ is a collection of stories and reflections, recorded in live takes at Manchester’s Blue Print Studios. On this record Blair remains true to his folk roots lyrically whilst continuing to push musically into new areas.
