Daniel Francois-Esprit Auber (1782-1871) was the most amiable French composer of the 19th century. His sparkling and beautiful overtures were once universally as famous as those of Rossini and Suppé. The greatest turning point in Auber’s life was meeting the librettist Eugène Scribe (1791-1861), with whom he developed a long and hugely successful working partnership. Success followed success; works such as Le Macon (1825) and La Muette de Portici (1828) brought Auber public fame and official recognition. Le Cheval de bronze, an opéra-féerique in three acts, derived from the tale « Les Sept Fils du Calender » in The Arabian Nights, unfolds in Shantung providence in a fairy tale China of long ago.

This programme looks beyond the works of the renowned Strauss family. Research by The Johann Strauss Society of Great Britain has uncovered many rare pieces by central European light music composers of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Julius Fučik’s humorous march Um Mitternacht includes an imitation of nocturnal cats by the trombones, and Paul Lincke’s Overture to his operetta Berliner Luft includes the famous march that is a traditional part of the Berlin New Year Concert.

Maurice Maeterlinck completed his play The Blue Bird ("L’Oiseau bleu") in 1908. Several of his previous works had proved popular as operatic subjects (Pelléas et Mélisande and Ariane et Barbe-Bleue) so it's no wonder that composers jumped at the opportunity to set his latest creation to music.French composer Albert Wolff based an opera on the story, which premiered at the New York Met but subsequently fell into oblivion. Prior to that, in 1912, Max Reinhardt adapted it as a Christmas play and staged a production in Berlin, inviting no less a person than Engelbert Humperdinck to write the incidental music for it. The music was never published, but Steffen Tast eventually located the score and salvaged it for us all to enjoy. A sweet story and newly discovered music by Humperdinck that's sweeter still? Truly a recipe for a fairy-tale ending!
