Bloch

In a complex field, this work is a first. The authors make an important connection between the conduction electrons and the Fermi surface in an elementary manner in the text. No currently available text explains this connection. They do this by deriving Newtonian equations of motion for the Bloch electron and diagonalizing the inverse mass (symmetric) tensor. The authors plan to follow up this book with a second, more advanced book on superconductivity and the Quantum Hall Effect.

This book provides a comprehensive introduction to and overview of the life and philosophy of Ernst Bloch. Bloch has had a strange fate in the English-speaking world. He wrote his famous three-volume opus, The Principle of Hope, while living in exile in the United States from 1938 to 1940. It was first published, however, in East Germany in the 1950s after he had returned to Europe and became a professor of philosophy at the University of Leipzig.

Ernst Bloch wurde am 8.7.1885 in Ludwigshafen geboren. Der marxistische Philosoph studierte neben Philosophie auch Germanistik, Musik und Physik. Zunächst arbeitete er als Privatlehrer und Publizist. 1915 protestierte er gegen die deutsche Politik im Ersten Weltkrieg. Von 1917 bis 1919 ging er aus pazifistischer Überzeugung ins Exil in die Schweiz. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Deutschland wurde er Mitglied der KPD. Er arbeitete als Publizist und sprach sich gegen die NSDAP aus. Nach der Ernennung Hitlers zum Reichskanzler, 1933, wurde Bloch ausgebürgert.
