We have put together and made available a free CD, as part of our celebrations in launching the new Document Records Store website, making available CDs and for the first time, downloads, from the mighty Document Records catalogue. It must be said that one of the most crucial elements in Document’s survival has been the internet. Some may call it a necessary evil; a double-edged sword. Whatever one’s view might be, it has, over the years, brought Document to a very large and ever growing fan base and followers of the music held, dearly, in the Document Catalogue. This is a process that continues, unabated. And with the internet has come the amazing ability to communicate to fans of this music around the world, informing them of what is in the catalogue, what is new and of offers, discounts and the like. Yet, it is more than that, with the use of social media, we can communicate something of the personality, character and thinking of those that are behind the scenes at Document in a way that no one could have dreamed of when the label was first created, back in 1985. Which raises a question that will be asked more and more by generations to come; how did people communicate before the advent of the internet?

The best of all of Al Kooper's studio albums, Rekooperation is a mostly instrumental album, on which the artist (playing organ and piano, and occasional guitar) and a band including Jimmy Vivino, Harvey Brooks, and Fred Walcott, among others, roar and pound their way through a baker's dozen of R&B, rock & roll, and soul classics. Everything from chestnuts like "Soul Twist," "Honky Tonk," "Johnny B. Goode," "Clean Up Woman," and " "Don't Be Cruel" to originals such as "Downtime" and "Alvino Johnson's Shuffle," without a notable gap in quality between them, are included – and the one vocal number, "I Wanna Little Girl," contains one of the finest singing performances that Kooper has ever turned in on record (but is also played so well, that it would work as an instrumental too). In many ways, this recording is a distant cousin to Blood, Sweat & Tears' Child Is Father to the Man, and was his first attempt at leading a band since that 1968 venture, which was sort of fitting since it led to Soul of a Man, Kooper's live-in-concert career retrospective album, the next time out.

Al Kooper, by rights, should be regarded as one of the giants of '60s rock, not far behind the likes of Bob Dylan and Paul Simon in importance. In addition to co-writing one classic mid-'60s pop-rock song, "This Diamond Ring" (though it was written as an R&B number), he was a very audible sessionman on some of the most important records of mid-decade, including Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone." Kooper also joined and led, and then lost two major groups, the Blues Project and Blood, Sweat & Tears. He played on two classic blues-rock albums in conjunction with his friend Mike Bloomfield. As a producer at Columbia, he signed the British invasion act the Zombies just in time for them to complete the best LP in their entire history; and still later, Kooper discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd and produced their best work. Instead, in terms of public recognition, Kooper has been relegated to second-rank status, somewhere midway between John Mayall and Steve Winwood. Apart from the fact that he's made, and continues to make great music, it's the public's loss that he's not better respected outside the ranks of his fellow musicians.

Los Angeles-based soul brother number one, The Reverend Shawn Amos, continues his mission to preach joyful blues to the world on his third album The Reverend Shawn Amos Breaks It Down, set to release February 16. When asked to write a short reflection describing the album and what he means by calling it a collection of 21st century Freedom Songs, this is his response: “this album was born while on tour through the American south during the spring of 2017. Driving through Tennessee and Alabama, I was reminded of my color, my otherness. I was drawn to how we pull ourselves apart while needing each other so badly. I revisited the freedom songs of The Staples Singers while visiting the ghosts of Birmingham and Memphis. Time stands still and life marches on.”

Fresh Garbage collects together all of the relevant documents from Led Zeppelin’s legendary four night set at the Fillmore West on their first tour. All of the main Led Zeppelin biographies state how important these series of gigs were for the success of the group with the public and their acceptance by the music industry. On the same bill with Taj Mahal and headliners Country Joe And The Fish, the initial scheduled called for two sets on January 9th, 10th, and the 11th but a final night was added on. The opening show coincided with Jimmy Page’s 25th birthday and the final night was when their debut album Led Zeppelin was released in the US. The tapes from these shows began to surface back in the days of vinyl but Scorpio is the first to present them in one cohesive set. The audience recordings are fair to good but given the historic importance, are more than acceptable and reveal a fascinating chapter in the band’s live history.
