If you're a died-in-the-tie-dye fan, you've probably already heard a tape of this show and will be pleased to know that here it sounds amazing; the entire three hour performance is included, mixed and mastered off of original 16-track live master recordings. If you're not already a Deadhead, Live at the Cow Palace: New Years Eve 1976 is an excellent encapsulation of mid '70s Dead. Recorded in-between 1975's invigorating Blues for Allah and 1977's dreadfully myopic Terrapin Station, it's eminently preferable to the live album Steal Yr Face, and goes a long way towards showing that the critically-maligned Godchaux era had a lot going for it. A few of the songs lumber a bit, but there's a real funkiness and versatility to this segment of the band's career that they never really had at any other time. Several stages of the band's career converge, such that the elastically funky version of the late '70s Dead, the almost jazz-fusion Dead of the early '70s, and the soft cowboy folk sound of 1970 of are all here. It's lovely. –Mike McGonigal

The 41 shows the Grateful Dead played in 1976 constituted a kind of shakedown cruise for the band, which had gone on hiatus from live performing in October 1974 and given only four concerts during 1975. In the spring of 1976, they suddenly reappeared with a film, The Grateful Dead Movie, and a live album, Steal Your Face, and between June 3 and October 15 they toured the U.S. They then woodshedded for four and a half months before re-emerging again in late February 1977, having recorded a new studio album, Terrapin Station. The only interruption in those efforts came with the New Year's Eve show they played at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, chronicled here, their first such seasonal appearance in four years.

Made up of seasoned players like Jimmy Herring from the Aquarium Rescue Unit, former Santana bassist Alfonso Johnson, and Dixie Dregs alums keyboardist T Lavitz and drummer Rod Morgenstein, Jazz Is Dead doesn't function so much as a Grateful Dead cover band than as an outfit that uses Dead gems as jumping-off points for a sonic journey that leads the listener not into well-traveled grooves, but into an enthralling soundscape without rules, vocals, or fixed time signatures. Superior playing and that special brand of ESP that all good jam bands possess further enrich these adroit and artful reinterpretations of Dead songs. "St Stephen" and "The Eleven" come out sounding like a cross between Indian bazaar music and the Allman Brothers (Herring spent a year filling in for an ailing Dickie Betts in the Allmans). Recorded live at the IMAC Theater in Huntington, New York, this disc captures all the nuances and guitar wizardry that Herring can wring out of his instrument, but one suspects that this band is even more spectacular live.

Less a homage than an interpretation, less a rereading than a resurrection, Deadjazz gives new life to the music of the Grateful Dead, the legendary group of the psychedelic era. Drawing inspiration from a cult repertoire, played by musicians who have had an unwavering bond with the Belmondo brothers for decades, this collective project is an immersion in a crucial moment in the history of music: when jazz became electric to the rhythms of rock and rock freed itself from the constraints of the song format through improvisation.

'Science fiction blues' isn't a genre you'll find in an illustrated history of rock and roll. At least not yet. But Devon Allman and his group Honeytribe make a case for its inclusion with their ground-breaking album Space Age Blues. That description gets right to the heart of Space Age Blues 11 songs. Allman, bassist George Potsos and drummer Gabriel Strange have created a portrait of our tech-mad era, an age moving in hyper drive that occasionally challenges our very humanity. Allman and Honeytribe's est record is much more than a concept album. It s also a musical thrill ride, carefully constructed, but full of surprises like guitar licks that explode into whistling comet trails, lush beds of strings and an overall sonic palette that draws on the best of electric music's past and present, blending the stomp of classic rock with the sweet caress of soul and the intoxicating swirl of modern psychedelia.

On their fourth LP, LAHS (after Allah-Las, Worship The Sun and Calico Review), drummer Matt Correia, bassist Spencer Dunham, and guitarists Miles Michaud and Pedrum Siadatian A.K.A Allah Las turn their collective gaze outward and toward the horizon. Simply referencing a common misspelling of the band’s name, this release on Mexican Summer finds the band turning in their most cohesive and ambitious work yet - a record inspired less by time, but by place.
