He only had a few hits in the 1950s and early '60s, but as Bo Diddley sang, "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover." You can't judge an artist by his chart success, either, and Diddley produced greater and more influential music than all but a handful of the best early rockers. The Bo Diddley beat bomp, ba-bomp-bomp, bomp-bomp is one of rock & roll's bedrock rhythms, showing up in the work of Buddy Holly, the Rolling Stones, and even pop-garage knock-offs like the Strangeloves' 1965 hit "I Want Candy." Diddley's hypnotic rhythmic attack and declamatory, boasting vocals stretched back as far as Africa for their roots, and looked as far into the future as rap. His trademark otherworldly vibrating, fuzzy guitar style did much to expand the instrument's power and range. But even more important, Bo's bounce was fun and irresistibly rocking, with a wisecracking, jiving tone that epitomized rock & roll at its most humorously outlandish and freewheeling.

Not every single track you'll ever want or need by the legendary shave-and-a-haircut rhythm R&B/rock pioneer, but a great place to begin. Two discs (45 songs) in a great big box with a nice accompanying booklet contain the groundbreaking introduction "Bo Diddley" (never again would he be referred to as Ellas McDaniel), its swaggering flipside "I'm a Man," the killer follow-ups "Diddley Daddy," "I'm Looking for a Woman," "Who Do You Love?," and "Hey Bo Diddley;" signifying street-corner humor ("Say Man"), piledriving rockers ("Road Runner," "She's Alright," "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover"), and numerous stunning examples of his daringly innovative guitar style.

Bo Diddley, also known as Ellas McDaniel, was one of the most distinctive and influential artists in the transition of popular music from blues and R&B through to rock ‘n’ roll during the 1950s. His music was best-known for his use of the guitar riff based on the 3/2 clave, sometimes known as “shave and a haircut, two bits”, and it was a motif taken up by many artists after he popularised it with his early hits. Although he did not have a huge number of hits, his songs, such as “I’m A Man”, “Pretty Thing”, “Who Do You Love” and “Mona” have inspired and been recorded by a huge number of artists. This great value 84-track 3-CD collection comprises the A & B sides of all his singles for the Checker label from his 1955 debut through to 1962, plus the tracks which were not included on his singles from his first seven albums - “Bo Diddley”, “Go Bo Diddley”, “Have Guitar Will Travel”, “In The Spotlight”, “Bo Diddley Is A Gunslinger”, “Bo Diddley Is A Lover” and “Bo Diddley Is A Twister”. It’s thorough overview of his crucial first few years of recording, which established his unique position as one of the pioneers of the genre.

AVID R&B continues with its Five Classic Album series with a re-mastered 2CD release from Bo Diddley, complete with original artwork, liner notes and personnel details 'Bo Diddley'; 'Go Bo Diddley'; 'Have Guitar Will Travel'; 'Bo Diddley Is A Gunslinger' and 'Bo Diddley Is A Lover' Musically, Ellas Otha Bates, better known as Bo Diddley, came up through the blues and gospel and R&B world being inspired by the likes of John Lee Hooker, Louis Jordan and Muddy Waters to name only a few. Unbelievably his first instrument was the trombone and next, even more bizarrely the violin on which he played in an orchestra until the age of 18!? We at AVID have a hard time imagining a guy the size of Bo Diddley playing the violin? Anyway, he was soon to discover the driving rhythm of the guitar which immediately became his instrument of choice. All you really need to do to appreciate the incredible sound of Bo Diddley is pop this CD into your car stereo and drive down the open road with the volume at full tilt! That's it! You will then understand how this guy became such an influence on many of the great rock stars of the 1960s and 1970s and beyond, and we're talking Beatles, Stones, Clapton, Page and Plant, Dylan, Petty and all points north south east and west.

One of the great things about Bo Diddley, something that often goes unmentioned, is that he was a home-recording pioneer, building his own studio years before any other rocker. The full fruits of this labor can be heard on Ride On: The Chess Masters, Vol. 3 – 1960-1961, Hip-O Select's third installment in their complete Bo Chess/Checker masters and easily the weirdest set yet. All 54 songs here were recorded over the course of 13 months: a whopping 17 them have never been released (an additional seven have never seen release in the U.S.), every one of them was cut in his home studio in Washington DC, and not a one reached the charts.

It was four years between the release of Bo's last album of all-new cuts, 500% More Man, and this album, during which time he'd spent time recording with Chess' top bluesmen, Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. The death of Leonard Chess in October of 1969 resulted in the sale of the label to the GRT corporation, and cost the company what little artistic guidance it had.
