Other people's songs have long been a staple for Bob Dylan, who first made his name in Greenwich Village by singing folk songs in the early '60s and often returned to old tunes as the years rolled by. Sometimes, he'd dip into the pre-WWII collection of standards known as the Great American Songbook, peppering set lists with unexpected selections as early as the '80s and even covering Dean Martin's "Return to Me" for The Sopranos in 2001, and he's made no secret of his affection for old-fashioned crooning on the records he's made since 2001's Love and Theft, but even with this long history of overt affection for pre-rock & roll pop, the existence of 2015's Shadows in the Night might come as a surprise.

Bob Dylan, the eternal enigma, comes again out of nowhere with this studio album, his 33rd, and his third in this decade after the brilliant Love and Theft (2001) and Modern Times (2006) albums. While both those albums' musical themes centered around Americana and blues, this album takes a new turn. "Together Through Life" starts off with a blazing Tex-Mex-themed "Beyond Here Lies Nothing", and it really sets the table for the rest of the album. Veering away mostly from the blues-themed and heavy "Modern Times", the album feels lighter in approach and atmosphere, as in "My Wife's Home Town", where you can hear Dylan crack a smile actually. The Tex-Mex themes are never far away, as in "If You Ever Go To Houston". Interestingly, Dylan co-wrote all but one of the songs' lyrics with Robert Hunter, he of Grateful Dead fame (co-writing with Jerry Garcia). Equally noteworthy in my book is that Dylan's vocals are as clear as I've heard them in many, many years. The album's closer "It's All Good" sums up the album perfectly.

Modern Times is the thirty-second studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on August 29, 2006, by Columbia Records. The album was the third work (following Time Out of Mind and "Love and Theft") in a string of critically acclaimed albums by Dylan. It continued its predecessors' tendencies toward blues, rockabilly and pre-rock balladry, and was self-produced by Dylan under the pseudonym "Jack Frost". Despite the acclaim, the album sparked some debate over its uncredited use of choruses and arrangements from older songs, as well as many lyrical lines taken from the work of 19th-century poet Henry Timrod and Roman poet Ovid.
