The biggest criticism of The Bootleg Series, Vol. 5: Bob Dylan Live 1975 — the third installment in Columbia/Legacy's excavation of the exhaustive Bob Dylan vaults is that it's a compilation of highlights from his Rolling Thunder Revue of 1975, one that doesn't set out to replicate a set list but instead offers two discs and 22 tracks from this fabled tour. Apart from that, there's very little to complain about on this superlative set, which offers the first official release of Rolling Thunder material. The wildest thing about this collection is the electric cuts, where an unwieldy band turns out an overpowering sound that sounds inevitable, as if it's the only way these songs could be played, even when you've heard these songs countless times before in other arrangements.

Damn, that's some unequal album. First of all, almost every artist here is way past his prime time. Eddie Vedder is exception, and maybe Young, with his recent "Ragged Glory" fame. Many of these versions are horrible, … but, I gotta say, black artists here come up really good, especially O'Jays, and Wonder is cool too. …

The Original Basement Tape is a 2015 "bootleg" by Bob Dylan featuring collaborating Canadian band The Hawks. The Hawks became The Band and this recording was done in 1967. It was released on the Canadian bootleg label Other Peoples Music, which in truth was a pressing made by Redeye/Columbia Legacy for Record Store Day so it is a vinyl rip of the 2015 pressing in beautiful monaural.
