Final recordings: Face to Face combines previously released material from John Lee Hooker with unfinished tracks he was working on before he died. Compiled by the estate of Hooker, with his daughter Zakiya at the helm, the unreleased material leans heavily toward soul-blues united with Hooker's patented electric Delta boogie. "Loving People," "Funky Mabel," "Six Page Letter" (a ballad with synth strings), and "Rock These Blues Away" are highlights. Zakiya Hooker takes the spotlight on "Mean Mean World," singing lead alongside her father, and the acoustic "Wednesday Evening Blues" features George Thorogood on guitar.

Formed in Lancashire in 1969 around the nucleus of three brothers, John, Lea and Neil Heather, Quiet World was a studio recording project perhaps best known for being the first album to feature future GENESIS guitarist STEVE HACKETT (and with a guest appearance from Steve's brother, John). Signed to Pye Records' progressive imprint, Dawn, the band's sole album was The Road, issued in August 1970. An impressive concept album, Quiet World's sole LP is now a hugely in demand collector's item. Shortly thereafter, Steve Hackett left to join the progressive rock group Genesis as lead guitarist.

Artist's Choice: Rolling Stones Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Released as part of Hear Music's ongoing Artist's Choice series, where major artists pick "the music that matters to them," the 2003 compilation Artist's Choice: Rolling Stones finds Mick, Keith, Charlie, and Ronnie running through 16 recordings of their favorite songs by other artists. It should come as no surprise that blues, R&B, soul, old-time rock & roll and reggae with a hint of funk form the core of the collection, since that's what's at the root of the Stones. In fact, the only left-field choices are Mick's pick of Sade's "By Your Side" and Ronnie hauling out the Beach Boys' "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times" at the end of the record. But even if this is a bit predictable, it is a good selection of songs – hard to go wrong with Robert Johnson, Otis Redding, Eddie Cochran, Andre Williams, Sly & the Family Stone, the Isley Brothers, and (of course) Muddy Waters, after all – and the track-by-track commentary by the Stones is entertaining and lively (no more so when Keith assumes the still-alive Andre Williams is dead and, if he's not, "he's probably doing time"). You could do far worse with your money.

Alicia Keys' debut album, Songs in A Minor, made a significant impact upon its release in the summer of 2001, catapulting the young singer/songwriter to the front of the neo-soul pack. Critics and audiences were captivated by a 19-year-old singer whose taste and influences ran back further than her years, encompassing everything from Prince to smooth '70s soul, even a little Billie Holiday…

Primarily consisting of vocalist/musician John Balance and programmer/visual artist Peter Christopherson, along with various other members and contributors, Coil were one of the most beloved, mythologized groups to emerge from the British post-industrial scene. Initially established as an offshoot of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV in 1982, the band spent more than two decades making uncompromising, often unspeakably beautiful music that explored themes related to alchemy, dreams, the occult, drugs, and sexuality. They have remained a longstanding influence on genres such as goth rock, dark ambient, neofolk, techno, and experimental music in general.
In 2000, Coil shocked their fans by announcing a live concert at the Royal Albert Hall. This was to be, essentially, their first live performance, having had some abortive live shows in the very early 1980s…

It was in the year 1985, when the foundation was laid for the career of a band which is, almost 35 years later, as active as on the very first day. Certainly, the talk is of Rage that have started out as Avenger, before the band name was changed. Now the three albums between 2001 and 2003 of the Metal Legend from Herne, Germany, are being re-released on three double CDs in a box set, including bonus CDs containing numerous demo versions that also include previously unreleased songs. Especially interesting for all fans is the digitally re-mastered version of the album "Welcome To The Other Side".
