The Impossible Missions Force is an elite group of agents chosen for their various abilities to infiltrate foreign governments as well as criminal organizations that are seen as threats to the security of the nation. Originally they were lead by Dan Briggs, but he was replaced by Jim Phelps after one year. Among its members are electronics executive Barney Collier, actor and master of disguise Rollin Hand, model Cinnamon Carter and strongman Willy Armitage. In later years Rollin leaves the team and is replaced by another master of disguise simply known as Paris and Cinnamon is replaced first by young Dana Lambert and then Lisa Casey

Cette série, immortalisée par la musique de Lalo Schifrin et son entrée en matière, via un magnétophone, « Bonjour, Monsieur Phelps. Votre mission, si toutefois vous l'acceptez… », met en scène une équipe d'agents secrets américains, membres de l'IMF (Impossible Mission Force) à qui l'on réserve les missions les plus délicates. Chacun de ces espions est expert dans un domaine : maquillage, déguisements, mise au point de matériel très sophistiqué,… Dans la plupart des épisodes, l'équipe intervient dans des pays, tous fictifs, d'Amérique latine ou d'Europe de l'Est. Leurs missions sont très diverses et très dangereuses : coups d'État, déstabilisation, désinformation, manipulations, complots, substitutions, infiltrations, contre-révolutions, etc. Dans le contexte de la guerre froide, ils sauvegardent les intérêts des États-Unis et de leurs alliés.

Le dernier jour de la Première guerre mondiale, Joe Bonham est mutilé par un obus. Il se retrouve manchot, muet, aveugle et cul-de-jatte. Il est incapable de penser ou sentir, mais les médecins prennent soin de lui en vue de la recherche médicale. Joe, dans cette terrible épreuve, se remémmore son passé. Bouleversée par le jeune mourant, une infirmière parvient à communiquer avec lui, il en profite pour lui demander de l'aider à mourir or les médecins ne sont pas de cet avis… Réalisé en 1965, Dalton Trumbo (Spartacus, Exodus) était un scénariste reconnu à Hollywood avant d'être inscrit sur "la liste noire" de la Commission des activités anti-américaines. En 1971, il reçoit le Prix spécial du Jury au Festival de Cannes.

Fin 1986, la carrière de Claude Nougaro est au plus mal. Le chanteur vient de se faire remercier par sa maison de disques. Il décide alors de quitter Paris et part à New York pour enregistrer un album avec les plus grands musiciens du moment. “Nougayork” sort fin 1987 et son succès est phénomènal. Il relance la carrière de Claude Nougaro et rajeunit considérablement son public. L’année suivante, c’est à Los Angeles que Claude Nougaro s’installe pour enregistrer, avec la crème des musiciens californiens, le pendant côte ouest de “Nougayork” : l’album “Pacifique” qui sort fin 1988. Fort de ces 2 albums détonants, il rentre en France en 1989 et entreprend une tournée française avec 11 musiciens américains ponctuée par une série de concerts au Zénith de Paris. Ce passage au Zénith (enregistré et filmé) marque l’apogée de cette période…

The title character, a six-year-old child, is the carrier of their hopes for the future.
