Remastered CD release of a 1958 LP with the young (20 yo then) trumpetist Booker Little, member of a quartet (with George Coleman sax, Tommy Flanagan piano, Art Davis bass), and the great Max Roach drums. Booker was about to be a member of the "new Max Roach quintet", replacing the early lost Clifford Brown. This CD release has 2 bonus tracks (7 & 8), with Booker Little and an octet but without Max. More classy jazz from the 50's. Enjoy.

Digitally re-mastered two CD collection containing the complete recordings by the Eric Dolphy Quintet with Booker Little made live at the Five Spot Café in 1961. This material originally appeared on three separate LPs (Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot Vols. 1 & 2 and Memorial Album) It has become legendary, not only for it's high musical quality, but also due to the fact that both talented horn men died at a tender age soon after. Booker Little passed away on October 5, 1961, at the age of 23, and Dolphy on June 29, 1964, at the age of 36.

This CD reissue features trumpeter Booker Little at the beginning of his tragically brief career. The first six selections find the distinctive soloist playing with a quintet also including the young tenor George Coleman, pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Art Davis, and drummer Max Roach (who was his regular employer at the time). Little contributed three now-obscure originals and also plays two standards and an early version of Miles Davis' "Milestones." The remainder of the CD has lengthy versions of "Things Ain't What They Used to Be" and "Blue 'n Boogie" from a jam session that matched Little with fellow Memphis-based players including Coleman, altoist Frank Strozier, and the masterful pianist Phineas Newborn. Overall, this forward-looking hard bop set is easily recommended.

How's this for a group.Teddy Quintet leader and vibes,Booker Ervin on tenor,Booker Little on trumpet,Mal Waldron piano,Addison Farmer on bass, and Ed Shaughnessy (who latter was really co-leader of Johnny Carson's Tonight Show band) on drums. That's a group.Teddy Charles was most famous for his thrid stream cool jazz Tentette but could swing in any context of style and has to be in list of greatest vibe players with Hamp,Hutcherson,Walt Dickerson,Cal Tjader,et al.
