Börje Fredriksson (June 30, 1937 – September 21, 1968) was a Swedish jazz tenor saxophonist. During his short career he had a major influence on the development of modern jazz in Sweden. Fredriksson was born in Eskilstuna, Sweden. He played at the beginning of the 1960s in a quartet with Bobo Stenson (piano), Palle Danielsson (bass) and Fredrik Norén (drums), as well as in groups with Eje Thelin and Bernt Rosengren. He played with the guitarist Rune Gustafsson in 1961 and with Bosse Broberg's quartet in 1962 at the Golden Circle Jazz Club in Stockholm. He recorded Intervall, (Columbia 1966), together with the posthumous, self-titled Börje Fredriksson, (EMI/Odeon, 1969). In 1968 he committed suicide. Fredriksson's sheet music was left in the hands of Bobo Stenson, and in 1994 he, Danielsson and Norén reconvened with saxophonist Joakim Milder, and released an album of Fredriksson's music entitled Sister Maj's Blouse. A follow-up, Epilogue, appeared in 1998 with the same ensemble.

Blues, Blues Rock

Peps Persson was probably the most important artist in introducing blues to Sweden in the late '60s and early '70s. In 1966, Peps Persson formed the group Downbeat Crowd and released a cover of Muddy Waters' "Got My Mojo Working" as a single. The first LP, "Blues Connection", was released in 1968 on Gazell and the name of the band was now Linkin' Louisiana Peps. The second album "Sweet Mary Jane" under the name Linkin' Louisiana Peps & Blues Quality released in 1969 on Sonet, a label he would keep to for most of his career, and followed a traditional blues and R&B formula.

It is a mystery that some musicians do not get the name and wide recognition that is granted to others. Trumpeter Kenny Dorham is one. And although Dorham was in Dizzy Gillespie's big band, Miles replaced Charlie Parker's quintet and Clifford Brown at Max Roach when the former died too early, Dorham had a hard time living his music. Hard to believe when you hear these recordings from Stockholm in 1964. Three songs in studio with Björn Alkes and Bosse Skoglund's hard swinging and forward-leaning rhythm section with Lars Sjösten on piano. The second recording is from the jazz club Gyllene Cirkeln where Göran Lindberg took over the piano stool in front of bassist Göran Pettersson and drummer Leif Wennerström. Dorham is any good at these Swedish sessions, I have to choose it leans on the heat of the studio versions even though Göran Lindberg's piano play in For all we know shimmers.

Jazz / World Music / Avant-Garde Jazz / African Traditions / West African

The term "cultural imperialism" is often used, justly, when Western musicians appropriate aspects of third world music for their own, watering it down to listener-friendly levels and giving scant acknowledgement to its original creators. Whereas this sort of approach has been the unfortunate rule, from Paul Simon to David Byrne, every once in a while a glorious exception emerges. Such an exception is Swedish percussionist Bengt Berger's Bitter Funeral Beer band. Berger, who devoted lengthy periods of study to West African music, particularly that of Ghana, assembled a large contingent of fellow Swedes, trained them in various aspects of West African traditions and, most importantly, chose Ghanaian folk themes with utterly beautiful and irresistible melodic lines from which to improvise.
