What a great set this is: thirteen discs chock full of masterful performances, many of which have already been praised here. EMI has not included any of Berglund’s Sibelius symphonies (except the Helsinki Kullervo) since they have been issued elsewhere, nor are there any concertos, which is a pity. But all of his Shostakovich symphonies for EMI (Nos. 5-7, 10, and 11) have finally been gathered together, including these benchmark performances of Nos. 6 and 11.

The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra is one of Britain's oldest orchestras, and among the country's regional orchestras (its mission is to serve South and South West England), it has attracted an unusually strong roster of international conductors and collaborators. The orchestra has premiered an impressive number of significant 20th century British works.

The Romanian conductor Constantin Silvestri (1913-1969) began his distinguished career in 1930 with the Bucharest Radio Symphony Orchestra, leading to the directorship of the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra in 1945. In 1956, Silvestri moved to Paris, and a year later he made his UK debut with the London Philharmonic. This led to a major contract with EMI, under which he conducted the Philharmonia, the Paris Conservatoire, and the Vienna Philharmonic orchestras in a wide selection of repertoire including Bartók, Debussy, Dvořák, Elgar, Franck, Hindemith, Liszt, Ravel, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, and Tchaikovsky. These ‘Spanish’-themed recordings are rarities and belonged to Silvestri’s private collection, only discovered after his death. Silvestri’s live performances of Debussy’s Ibéria, Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain (Noches en los jardines de España), and The Three Cornered Hat (Le tricorne) are new additions to his large discography, either commercial recordings or live broadcasts. The wide-ranging recording captures Silvestri’s hugely dynamic, colorful, and expressive conducting of these popular Spanish-influenced works.

The first conductor was Kenneth Montgomery, followed by Maurice Gendron, Norman Del Mar, Roger Norrington, Tamás Vásáry, and Alexander Polianichko, as well as director/violinists Ronald Thomas and Richard Studt. This set of idiomatically lyrical, rhythmic, and colourful interpretations by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and its Chief Conductor, Kirill Karabits, who appears on Chandos for the first time, marks the start of a new series dedicated to lesser-known composers from former Soviet Union countries. The Azerbaijani composer, teacher, folklore authority, and artistic dynamo Kara Karayev was at the forefront of his country’s musical life for almost four decades after the end of the Second World War, recognised as among the significant composers of the post-war Soviet Union. At the dawn of Karayev’s centenary, Kirill Karabits pays homage to the composer by exploring some of his best-known works: the Persian-inspired orchestral suite The Seven Beauties, a movement from the ballet The Path of Thunder, the exuberant "Don Quixote", as well as the symphonic poem "Leyla and Mejnun", after a poem which Byron called "The Romeo and Juliet of the East".

Kirill Karabits and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra embark on a fascinating journey through the seven Prokofiev symphonies, and will explore some rare works from the composer's early years that help chart his symphonic development. On this first album of the cycle the rarely performed alternative ending for the Seventh Symphony can be heard.

This has the look of a career-making recording from Scots violinist Nicola Benedetti, putting her up against difficult repertory that diverges from the crowd-pleasing fare that formed the basis of her career up to this album. It would have been hard to predict just how well she pulls off her task here; few could have heard the profound interpreter of Russian music in the Italia and Silver Violin collections from earlier in the 2010s. The Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1, Op. 99, is an emotionally thorny work in five movements anchored by a tense passacaglia in the middle. The composer withheld it from publication during the period of renewed Stalinist repression in the late 1940s. It was premiered in 1955 by David Oistrakh, and in endurance and elevated tone even if not quite in lyrical grandeur, Benedetti brings that master to mind. Sample the Stravinskian "Burlesque" finale for a sense of how Benedetti gets outside herself here. The Glazunov Violin Concerto, Op. 82, is a more stable work, rooted in pre-WWI conservatory traditions, and Benedetti's reading is nothing short of letter-perfect.
