In his 2016 autobiography, “Born To Run”, Bruce Springsteen reveals the essence of his songwriting: “Most of my writing is emotionally autobiographical. I’ve learned you’ve got to pull up the things that mean something to you in order for them to mean anything to your audience. That’s where the proof is. That’s how they know you’re not kidding.”

Springsteen supported The Ghost of Tom Joad with a first-ever solo tour from 1995 to 1997. Being only the tenth show, Upper Darby 12/9/95 captures a seminal Joad performance in unadulterated form, showcasing his acoustic guitar playing and evocative storytelling. Ten songs from Upper Darby were later serviced to radio stations by Columbia Records–this marks the first release of the complete 12/9/95 set which features all 12 songs from Joad, plus Bruce-as-troubadour readings of "Adam Raised a Cain" "Darkness On The Edge Of Town," "Murder Incorporated," "Blinded By The Light" and "Streets Of Philadelphia.

If there’s any period in modern Springsteen history that continues to grow in admiration it is the 2007-2008 Magic era.

We often cite the Reunion tour as a demarcation between the “classic” and “modern” Springsteen eras. Yet this April already marks 23 years since the start of the Reunion tour in Barcelona. Do the math, and the E Street Band’s return in 1999 is inching ever closer to being the midpoint of their overall career—a line to be reached in 2026, at which point it will have been 27 years from the start of Reunion; and Reunion itself was 27 years after the band formed in 1972. Time flies.

Bruce Springsteen once said he intended to make an album with words like Bob Dylan that sounded like Phil Spector where he sang like Roy Orbison, a nifty summary of many, but not all, of his artistic ambitions and a key to his appeal. Unlike any other singer/songwriters saddled with the appellation of "the new Dylan" in the early '70s, Springsteen never hid how he was raised on '60s AM radio.

The Tunnel of Love tour again? That’s surely a sentiment some are expressing with this month’s release of New York 5/16/88, the outstanding opening night performance from the final, five-show stand on the US leg of the 1988 tour.

Unlike any other singer/songwriters saddled with the appellation of "the new Dylan" in the early '70s, Springsteen never hid how he was raised on '60s AM radio. He loved rock & roll, whether it was the initial blast from the '50s or the mini-symphonies from the days before the Beatles or the garage rockers that surfaced in the wake of the British Invasion, and all this could be heard within his wild, wooly collective E Street Band, a group who debuted on his second album, 1973's The Wild The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle, and who would support him throughout most of his career.
