Buck Owens

Undoubtedly, Buck Owens and His Buckaroos were among the biggest acts in the world from 1964 to 1974. They not only topped the charts, but also filled concert halls around the world. They were such a popular concert magnet that many performances were recorded and published only in the respective foreign countries. Unfortunately, much of this material never saw the light of day outside the country where it was published. Until now.

Maybe it was an epiphany of sorts. As Buck tells it, “One day I was watching Austin City Limits and Dwight Yoakam was on, then he dedicates the program to ‘Buck Owens.’ So I said, I’m going to see what this kid is like.” It wasn’t long after that he was on stage with Dwight singing his old hits. Buck was bitten by the bug to return to music, after calling it quits almost ten years earlier. This man from Sherman, Texas - probably best-known as the wide-grinning rube on Hee Haw for so many years - started a country music revolution. Or more accurately, a counter-revolution. It was called “The Bakersfield Sound”.

Throughout Omnivore Recordings’ 12-year relationship with the Buck Owens Private Foundation, one request from the fans was clear and consistent—to make Buck’s late-’60s/early-’70s releases available again as stand-alone reissues. Omnivore is proud to answer that call and announce 9 titles to be released throughout the summer and fall of 2021.

When a young Merle Haggard played in Buck Owens’ band, he suggested the name “Buckaroos” for the combo. While Merle’s tenure in the band was short-lived, he did pretty well for himself afterward.
