This is the fifth CD of new music written expressly for the all-star guitar trio of Bill Frisell, Julian Lage and Gyan Riley. Here Zorn draws inspiration from the enigmatic tales of Argentine philosopher/ writer Jorge Luis Borges. Like a collection of short stories, each composition is a miniature world in itself and touches on philosophy and mysticism as well as music. Blending folk, classical, jazz, bluegrass, world music and more, this is truly music of the 21st century—unclassifiable and unique. Filled with telepathic interplay and surprising compositional twists and turns, the music is achingly beautiful and intensely evocative. Julian and Gyan are two of new music’s most accomplished guitar virtuosos. Brought together for Zorn’s “Bagatelles” project in 2015, their duo performances are truly a transcendent experience—filled with telepathic interplay, meticulous detail, and astonishing soloistic fireworks. Their 2017 CD “Midsummer Moons” (inspired by lunar imagery in Shakespeare) is one of Zorn’s most beautiful creations, and here they perform a dramatic book of music inspired by the haunting and enigmatic novel “A High Wind in Jamaica”. Filled with ominous mystery and a dangerous innocence,“Quatrain” is an absolute delight.

Julian Lage and Gyan Riley have a magical rapport, a deep mutual respect, and have recorded some of Zorn's most melodious and intimate compositions. In addition to the many books of music written for their trio with Bill Frisell, they have also worked together as a duo on The Bagatelles (2015), Midsummer Moons (2017), Book Beri'ah (2019), and Quatrain (2023). For this fifth duo CD Zorn turns again to William Shakespeare for inspiration and has composed a varied collection of ballads, dances, lullabies, and fantasies that will delight, stimulate, and inspire. Her Melodious Lay contains nine poetic, through-composed pieces that blend classical, folk, jazz, film music, and more into a strikingly dramatic musical vision. Modern guitar music at its very best!
