Don Lope, un aristocrate âgé, devient le tuteur, puis l'amant de Tristana, une belle jeune femme qu'assaillent d'étranges vision. Celle-ci s'éprend du peintre Horacio et quitte son vieux tuteur pour vivre avec lui. Deux années passent et Tristana, malade et abandonnée par son amant, retourne vers Don Lope.

Tristana (Catherine Deneuve) es una joven y hermosa huerfana que su tio Don Lope (Fernando Rey) acoge con gusto en su casa, tal y como prometió a sus padres. Don Lope se convierte en tutor de la joven, pero no tardará en crecer en él el deseo. Tristana intenta evitar a Don Lope sin conseguirlo, así que sin del todo desearlo se convierte en su amante. Pero Tristana no tardará en encontrar un nuevo amor.

Tristana is an orphan adopted by nobleman Don Lope Garrido. Don Lope falls in love with her and thus treats her as daughter and wife from the age of nineteen, a bit of a scandal, but, by age twenty-one Tristana starts finding her voice, to demand to study music, art and other subjects with which she wishes to become independent. She meets the young artist Horacio Díaz, falls in love, and eventually leaves Toledo to live with him.

Après avoir réservé une place dans le train en direction de Paris, via Madrid, Mathieu Fabert, un notable vieillissant, est accueilli par Martin, son fidèle domestique, qui lui annonce une fois de plus la fuite de Conchita, sa ravissante petite amie. L'explosion d'une voiture piégée retarde encore un peu plus le départ de Mathieu. A son arrivée sur le quai de la gare, le vieil homme déverse un seau d'eau sur la tête d'une femme au visage marqué de coups pour l'empêcher de monter dans le train. Puis Mathieu prend enfin place dans le compartiment qu'il partage avec une jeune mère de famille, un magistrat et un nain, à qui il entreprend de raconter l'histoire de sa vie…

Just after boarding a train, much to the surprise of his fellow passengers, a man pours a bucket of water over a young girl on the platform. Over the next few hours he explains (and we see in flashback) how he became obsessed by her (so much so that he failed to notice that she was played by two different actresses, representing different sides of her personality), and how she tantalised him, but would never allow him to satisfy his desire for her…

Archibaldo de la Cruz tells in the police station the story about the murder of a woman, which he insists to be the author. He's a talented potter, with refined manners but mentally unstable. One night, he says, he went to spent the night in a casino, where he met a beautiful woman. After having a fight with her lover, the woman crashes her car and De la Cruz offers to ride her home, place where he thinks he committed the murder. Archibaldo's engaged with a pretty and very catholic girl, but before that, he gets fascinated with a nice and beautiful woman, Lavinia. One afternoon, he invites her to his workshop, moment when she seizes the opportunity to make a joke to the nervous Archibaldo. Are these events the product of a compulsive and unstable mind, sexually frustrated?

Gone several years, the brooding Alejandro returns to the hacienda of his foster sister, Catalina, whom he loves, to find her married to the wealthy and effete Eduardo. Alejandro hates Eduardo and Catalina's brother Ricardo; he's rich now and has a lien on the drunken Ricardo's ranch. He also wants Catalina to run away with him. She loves him as if he was her soul, but she also loves Eduardo and is pregnant, so she won't leave. She wants Alejandro to stay nearby, a soul mate, but he, ruled by instinct and passion, stays only to hurt her. He woos Isabel, Eduardo's impressionable young sister. The passions of impossible love and corrosive hate play out against Mexico's barren high chaparral.

Francisco Galvan de Montemayor is a bitter man battling to regain properties once owned by his ancestors. He blames the world for cheating him of his rightful legacy, When he meets Gloria Milata, he thinks her the perfect woman and he is determined to marry her, and succeeds in winning her away from her fiancée, Raul Conde. The honeymoon and the following months have an unnerving effect on Gloria. She discovers her husband to be an irrationally jealous man who interprets the innocent actions of other men to be advances toward his wife. His distorted thinking drives him to abuse her. Her story of his cruelty is disbelieved by all but Conde. She finally leaves him. He searches frantically for her and finally suffers a mental breakdown. He emerges from the hospital treatment a mild man, and joins a monastery.
