On November 10, 1964, The Byrds inked a deal with Columbia Records. Or more accurately, Jim (later Roger) McGuinn, Gene Clark and David Crosby signed to Columbia Records, with Michael Clarke and Chris Hillman officially joining the roster later. But before that auspicious major label signing, The Byrds’ bags were packed, pre-flyte, it was zero hour…and after that day, they were destined to be high as a kite…eight miles high. (Pardon the mixing of musical metaphors.) The band’s pre-Columbia days have been anthologized over the years almost as extensively as their “official” catalogue, with the earliest release coming in 1969 on Together Records, simply titled Preflyte.

It goes without saying that The Best of the Byrds: Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 doesn't have as many classic singles as the group's first hits collection, since the Byrds stopped being a singles band shortly after the release of Greatest Hits.

During this period the band underwent several line-up changes with frontman and guitarist Roger McGuinn remaining the only constant member. In 1991 The Byrds were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the original five members performing together for the last time after their induction.

If Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde found Roger McGuinn having to re-create the Byrds after massive personnel turnovers (and not having an easy time of it), Ballad of Easy Rider was the album where the new lineup really hit its stride. Gracefully moving back and forth between serene folk-rock (the title cut, still one of McGuinn's most beautiful melodies), sure-footed rock & roll ("Jesus Is Just All Right"), heartfelt country-rock ("Oil In My Lamp" and "Tulsa County"), and even a dash of R&B (the unexpectedly funky "Fido," which even features a percussion solo), Ballad of Easy Rider sounds confident and committed where Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde often seemed tentative. The band sounds tight, self-assured, and fully in touch with the music's emotional palette, and Clarence White's guitar work is truly a pleasure to hear…

At nearly 90 tracks, this four-disc set is indeed pretty much the ultimate Byrds compilation, running through the group's entire history with Columbia Records, including all the obvious singles like "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Turn! Turn! Turn!," and "Eight Miles High" as well as key album tracks and B-sides, making this a wonderful portrait of a fascinating pop band evolving from folk-rock through psychedelia to country to a nascent template for today's country rock. It's particularly nice to hear two of Gene Clark's most gorgeous love songs, "She Don't Care About Time" and "The World Turns All Around Her," together in one package, along with what might be David Crosby's most gorgeous pop song, the ebullient "Lady Friend." Throw in songs like "So You Want to Be a Rock and Roll Star" and you have a great seat to the story of how a wonderfully quirky folk-rock band played it all out, emerging as one of the most influential bands in the whole history of rock & roll.

The recording sessions for the Byrds' fifth album, The Notorious Byrd Brothers, were conducted in the midst of internal turmoil that found them reduced to a duo by the time the record was completed. That wasn't evident from listening to the results, which showed the group continuing to expand the parameters of their eclecticism while retaining their hallmark guitar jangle and harmonies…
