Millions of Americans have no health insurance and live in fear that one illness could bankrupt them. Even though the U.S. spends far more on health care than other wealthy nations, Americans die of preventable diseases at greater rates. The PBS NewsHour special, “Critical Care: America vs the World,” examines how four other nations achieve universal care for less money, with better outcomes.

The special will be hosted by PBS NewsHour’s chief correspondent, Amna Nawaz, and examines how the lack of affordable, quality child care is affecting American families. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic transformed daily life for millions of working parents and pushed the nation’s child care system to the brink of collapse. Out of that turmoil, a heated debate has emerged over what, if anything, can be done to better meet the needs of parents and young children.

The Horizon team have gathered together a team of scientists and doctors to investigate the incredible, natural material that is growing out of our heads - our hair. With access to the research laboratories of some of the world's leading hair care companies, including L'Oreal and ghd, the team explore the latest cutting-edge research and technology designed to push the boundaries of hair and hair care.

Writer and performer Lemn Sissay is a force of nature. He spent his first 18 years bouncing between foster families, children's homes and assessment centres. Since then he has come to terms with his trauma by telling his story around the world. Now he visits Coventry to meet seven young people who are currently in the care of the council, and who, between them, have had 40 different placements and 70 social workers. His mission is to help them express their experiences through words, and perform them to an audience that can make a difference to their lives. It's 30 years since Lemn left the care system and he believes that not enough has changed for these young people.
