The first Brazilian performer to attain international stardom, singer and actress Carmen Miranda was born Maria do Carmo Miranda da Cunha on February 9, 1909 in Marco de Canavezes, Portugal, but she was raised in Rio de Janeiro from infancy onward. After quitting school, she began working at an area shop, where her habit of singing on the job brought her to the attention of a local radio station.

Beth Carvalho is a Brazilian singer, guitarist, cavaquinist, and composer whose name is synonymous with samba, particularly the Mangueira school. Though she began recording with Os Gatos in the mid-'60s, her run of solo albums between 1974's Pra Seu Governo and 1988's Alma Do Brasil is almost unparalleled in Brazilian MPB for their consistently high quality. She has recorded the works of now-legendary samba composers such as Nelson Cavaquinho, Guilherme de Brito, and Cartola, supporting them long before the listening public did; she assisted mightily in making them household names in Brazil. Though she is a long-established member of the Mangueira school of samba, she has also recorded dozens of songs by composers associated with the Portela school, as well as the work of songwriters from the pagode style such as Almir Guineto and Jorge Aragão…

“O samba carioca como ele é todo lindo, cheio de graça e simplicidade”. Assim termina o texto de Herminio Bello de Carvalho sobre o disco “Samba na Madrugada” (1968), impresso no encarte do LP. O álbum, que foi lançado em 1966 com o nome “Na Madrugada”, une dois mestres do samba, Paulinho da Viola e Elton Medeiros. Esse importante registro da música nacional volta às lojas esse ano pela coleção “Clássicos em Vinil”, da Polysom, em vinil de 180 gramas. O disco traz 11 faixas, assinadas uma parte por Paulinho da Viola e outra por Elton Medeiros. Ambos contaram com grandes nomes nas composições, entre eles Candeia, Casquinha, Zé Keti e Cartola. Entre os sucessos, ora interpretado por um, ora por outro, estão “Minhas Madrugadas”, “O Sol Nascerá”, “Mascarada” e “Arvoredo”.
