The Six Cello Suites by Johann Sebastian Bach are part of the Old Testament of cello literature. Every cellist who looks at the music senses immediately how naturally the notes are arranged around the strings of the instrument. Yet there are many questions and discussions about these ‘Suites a Violoncello Solo senza Basso’. Did Bach really write the music for cello, or for cello alone? When did he write this music – at the court of Cöthen or earlier?

Combined with the previous recording of Opus III and V, this publication completes the oeuvre of cello sonatas by Emanuel Siprutini. Born in a Jewish family, perhaps in Holland, he ar-rived in England following the "Jewish naturalization act" established in 1753 by King George II of England, and he settled in London as a wine merchant, concert performer and cello teacher, having among his students John Crosdill, the most famous British cellist of the eighteenth century. Leopold Mozart met Siprutini in 1764, during his stay in England. Struck by the cellist's talent, he tried to convince him to con-vert to Catholicism, but Emanuel remained serenely Jewish. Between 1756 and 1775 he published four books of cello sonatas which the Mozarts certainly owned, as one might think by finding fragments and ideas in Wolfgang's most beautiful works.

"Pierre Fournier’s 1965 collaboration with Wilhelm Kempff yielded one of the greatest complete recordings of the Beethoven cello sonatas. Their account of Op. 69 epitomises the nobility and eloquence of these unparalleled interpretations, and CD transfers are remarkably spacious and detailed." (Michael Jameson, BBC Music Magazine)

On February 2, 2024 the Steinway & Sons label is pleased to release Ailbhe's McDonagh's recording of Bach's Complete Solo Cello Suites (STNS 30232). As Ailbhe writes in her program notes, "Bach’s Cello Suites are some of the most beautiful, challenging, and complex works composed for the instrument. Bach’s ability to create counterpoint on a solo instrument is astounding. He really makes the cello sound like an orchestra rather than just one instrument. Composers the world over (myself included) have been inspired by him to compose solo suites for the cello. The variety of characters, moods, rhythmic interest and phrase structure heard in these suites keep the performer engaged and eager to perform these works over and over again."

Compared to the Passions, Masses and numerous other works (all together well over a thousand) these "Suites for solo cello" seem like little things: perhaps studies intended to be practiced on the instrument. A simple succession of dances so as not to be worthy of publication. In fact, written between 1717 and 1723, they were published only in 1824 in Paris with the title Sonates ou études. Virtually a century after they were composed.
Today they are counted among the most significant and emblematic works written for the cello and constitute an unavoidable point of passage for every cellist and meditation for the listener.
