Tenor-saxophonist Eddie Harris's third album features him exploring 11 themes from Henry Mancini's score for Breakfast At Tiffany 's. Harris stretches out the most on "Moon River" and the title cut but he does justice to the nine lesser-known themes. This long out-of-print LP holds one's interest throughout and, although Harris comes up with plenty of fresh ideas, he also never leaves the melody far behind. His unlisted backup group is a septet that includes trombonist Joe Avant, vibraphonist Charles Stepney, pianist Willie Pickens and guitarist Joe Diorio. A fine (if obscure) outing. –Scott Yanow

The mighty Charles Owens is back, this time with a double album highlighting two formats. Three And Thirteen finds Owens back at Jellowstone Studio in Richmond with Devonne Harris on drums, and Andrew Randazzo playing electric bass. The trust, telepathy, and pocket has only grown and evolved with time, and the trio runs through fresh and daring arrangements of familiar songs as far back as 1929 (The beautiful, haunting and plaintive Hoagy Carmichael chestnut “Stardust”), to as recent as 2008 (Radiohead’s “15 Step”). The second part of the LP (Thirteen) finds the R4ND4ZZO BIG B4ND presenting lovingly crafted arrangements of Owens’ compositions by master arranger and bassist Andrew Randazzo.

Even when factoring in the vital contributions of bassist Andrew Randazzo and drummer Devonne Harris, there's no denying Charles Owens' firm hold on the nine tracks of A Day With Us. Throughout a program consisting largely of standards, the music is ruled by the broad, resonant sound of the leader's tenor saxophone and the dogged persistence that characterizes everything he plays. As if building something momentous on the spur of the moment with his wits and the force of his will, the sounds conjure up hard labor, sweat, and grime. In some instances Owens shovels notes out of the bell of his horn; in others, he wields a pneumatic drill.

There’s more to Shakespeare’s songs than a hey-nonny-nonny, and the depth of the bard’s texts has inspired composers from well beyond the cultural borders of the English language. Nearly half of the Phoenix Bach Choir’s “Shakespeare in Song” disc offers intriguing music by composers who are neither English nor American. Chief among these is Switzerland’s Frank Martin, whose Songs of Ariel constitute a modern choral classic. These are haunting, harmonically unsettled settings, and for an example of the skill and beauty the Phoenix Bach Choir brings to this program, just listen to the wonderful intonation on the last chord of “Before You Can Say ‘Come’ and ‘Go’.”

An innovative tenor saxophonist and composer who was also proficient on the electric piano and organ, Chicago based musician Eddie Harris was best known for introducing the electrically amplified saxophone and for his composition “Freedom Jazz Dance,” recorded and popularized by Miles Davis in 1966. In 1961, his own jazz arrangement of Ernest Gold's theme from the movie Exodus became the first jazz record ever to be certified gold. One of the first musicians to successfully blend funk and jazz, Harris’ 1967 album, “The Electrifying Eddie Harris,” reached the number 2 spot on the R&B charts. Presented here is Eddie’s vintage 1970 album “Smokin,’” a classic collection of mostly original compositions that once again blurred the lines between funk and jazz. All selections have been newly remastered.

Charles McPherson is a singular bebop saxophonist. After playing with Charles Mingus for over a decade, McPherson has been traveling all over the world as a renowned leader and mentor. He remains one of the few musicians able to channel the classic bebop might of predecessors like Charlie Parker, but he also possesses a powerful style of his own as both a composer and soloist. Audiences will be able witness both sides of that incredible talent with this band.
