Tonight At Noon is an elegant compilation album from virtuoso bassist and accomplished pianist Charles Mingus. Comprised of studio outtakes from two of his most endearing releases, The Clown and Oh Yeah, the album features an array of legendary musicians including Shafi Hadi, Wade Legge, Roland Kirk, Booker Ervin, Doug Watkins and Jimmy Knepper. Mingus’ smooth bluesy piano playing and articulate melodies are rooted in this cohesive collection.

Features 24 bit remastering and comes with a mini-description. After bassist/composer Charles Mingus' death on January 5, 1979, a reunion band featuring some of his former sidemen called Mingus Dynasty was formed. Cut just six months after the bassist's demise, this album was the first Mingus Dynasty recording, and it has its moments. Such alumni as altoist John Handy, trombonist Jimmy Knepper, trumpeter Jimmy Owens, and tenorman Joe Farrell meet up with two members of Mingus' last major band (pianist Don Pullen and drummer Dannie Richmond), plus bassist Charlie Haden, who ably fills in for the late bandleader.

Atlantic Jazz: Best Of The '50s is self-explanatory but I will explain. This is a Rhino compilation of music from Atlantic Records' jazz vaults, representing the 1950's. Primarily instrumental but featuring a small handful of vocal jazz, it is some of the best music the label had to offer. This was a library disc so since there were stickers and handwriting on the booklet and disc, there are no scans for it.

Rhino continues with their admirable excavation of the Atlantic vaults with this, their second round of some of the label's '60s jazz highlights. In the spotlight are such instrumental heavyweights as Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Eddie Harris, Charles Mingus, Hank Crawford, and Yusef Lateef, and on the vocal end there's fine work by Betty Carter and Mose Allison. Yes, this album might have a tough time competing with similar collections from the Blue Note and Impulse! imprints. But then again, those labels would be hard-pressed to come up with a selection as varied as this: From the truly idiosyncratic Ellington musings of Kirk ("Creole Love Call") to a taste of Aquarius age jazz by Charles Lloyd ("Dreamweaver: Meditation/Dervish Dance"), this 14-track disc truly runs the '60s jazz gamut.

For the third album collection of the Joni Mitchell Archives project, The Asylum Albums (1976-1980) covers what is arguably the knottiest and most challenging period in a career known for being knotty and challenging. While there are certainly fans who have a preference for Mitchell's diaristic/post-folk sounds of the late '60s/early '70s Reprise era or the exploratory fusions of pop and jazz of her first three Asylum albums, most of those fans can find space to love all (or at least most) of the work she released between 1968 and 1975. Utterly unbound by genre formality or commercial considerations—and also very explicitly chafing at the expectations put upon her by the music business—these three studio albums (and one equally unapologetic live album) proved to be much more divisive.
