Digitally remastered and expanded three CD deluxe edition of this 1972 album housed in a cardboard replica of a wooden box. The set closes with a newly unearthed, 30-minute interview Charles did that was recorded shortly before the Bobby Charles album was released in August 1972.
Hooking up with the Band, specifically Rick Danko and their producer John Simon, was one of the smartest moves Bobby Charles ever made. His subsequent eponymous album on Bearsville not only gave him a bigger audience, but led to the perfect production for his sly, subtle blend of New Orleans R&B, rock & roll, and country…

Singer/songwriter Pearl Charles has a knack for writing melodic, low-key indie pop with a jangling country tone. A lifelong musician, the Los Angeles native first gained exposure as one-half of lo-fi Americana duo the Driftwood Singers, who released a pair of EPs and one full-length in 2012. A stint playing drums for garage pop act the Blank Tapes, introduced her to the crew at Burger Records, who offered to release her first solo effort, a 2015 self-titled EP. The raw '60s-inspired garage and light psych-pop of that first release soon gave way to the more polished pop and country-rock of 2018's Sleepless Dreamer, Charles' full-length debut and first for Brooklyn indie Kanine Records. ~ Timothy Monger

Genre: Pop, Chanson

A keystone in the modern chanson genre, French cabaret singer and songwriter Charles Aznavour entertained the world for close to 75 years. In the early '50s, he often opened for Edith Piaf, and composed several songs for her, thus beginning a solid reputation as both a gifted writer and a unique song stylist. Aznavour had a special talent for writing and singing from unusual points of view, creating personal and compassionate character studies that expanded the emotional range of the typical pop ballad. He also acted in dozens of films, most famously Truffaut's Shoot the Piano Player. Aznavour continued to perform and record music until just before his death in 2018. His status as the quintessential French popular culture icon was something of an irony for a man who identified himself most closely with his Armenian heritage. Born Shahnour Varenagh Aznavourian, his French roots derived from the fact that his family fled the threat of massacre by the Turks – his father was a singer and sometime restauranteur, while his mother was an actress and part-time seamstress.
