This collection of 78 rpm singles, all recorded on June 6, 1950, was released in 1956. Several things distinguish this from numerous other quintet recordings featuring these two bebop pioneers. It was recorded during the period that Parker was working under the aegis of producer Norman Granz, whose preference for large and unusual ensembles was notorious. The end result in this case is a date that sounds very much like those that Parker and Gillespie recorded for Savoy and Dial, except with top-of-the-line production quality. Even more interesting, though, is Parker's choice of Thelonious Monk as pianist.

With jazz – lite and trite, near and drear, pretentious and tendentious – seemingly on the increase, the reissue of five “classic” Parker Verve albums (even in truncated form) is to be welcomed. Newcomers (if any exist) to his latter-day recordings as well as devotees (still alive) will find much to enjoy in this Avid compilation.

Bird and Diz is a studio album by jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. It was recorded primarily on June 6, 1950 in New York City. Two tracks featured on the original pressing, "Passport" and "Visa", were recorded by Parker, without Gillespie and with a different personnel than that of the other tracks, in March and May 1949. The album was originally issued in 1952 in 10" format as a collection of 78 rpm singles on the Verve subsidiary label Clef Records.

This historic September 29, 1947, concert reunited Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker for five stunning performances and captures 11 selections by Dizzy's big band at the peak of its powers. Selections represent the Afro-Cuban sound he helped midwife ("Cubano Be, Cubano Bop," featuring Chano Pozo and Lorenzo Salan); virtuosity disarmed by goofball humor ("Oop-Pop-A-Da," "Salt Peanuts"); straight-ahead bop (Tadd Dameron's "Hot House" and Parker's "Relaxin' At Camarillo"); and more adventurous writing (John Lewis' "Tocatta For Trumpet" and Gil Fuller's "Things To Come").

Nine years after Benny Goodman's groundbreaking concert, bebop finally came to Carnegie Hall. Most notable on this 1997 CD (which contains music that has been reissued many times, often incoherently) is the meeting between altoist Charlie Parker and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. Joined by the underrecorded piano of John Lewis, bassist Al McKibbon and the slightly overrecorded drums of Joe Harris, Bird and Diz generate some real fireworks on five songs, and Parker's rendition of "Confirmation," and the CD's high point, is definitive and memorable.

Charlie Parker was a legendary Grammy Award–winning jazz saxophonist who, with Dizzy Gillespie, invented the musical style called bop or bebop. Charlie Parker was born on August 29, 1920, in Kansas City, Kansas. From 1935 to 1939, he played the Missouri nightclub scene with local jazz and blues bands. In 1945 he led his own group while performing with Dizzy Gillespie on the side. Together they invented bebop. In 1949, Parker made his European debut, giving his last performance several years later. He died a week later on March 12, 1955, in New York City.

Bird lives! This graffiti appeared around New York in the wake of Charlie "Bird" Parker's death on March 12, 1955 at th age of 34- and it still holds true today. The alto-sax-giant, one of the originators of Bebop, invented a method of improvising which Jazz musicians still use today. His fluent style, the ornithological sound of his alto, and the many Bop-standards h wrote from "Moose The Mooche" via "Scrapple From the Apple" or "Relaxin at Camarillo" to "Now's the Time" - made hir an icon of modern Jazz. This 10 CD-box-set documents the musical life of "Bird" through his original albums, including man rarities and contemporaries like Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Young, or Thelonious Monk.
