When producer Norman Granz decided to let Charlie Parker record standards with a full string section (featuring Mitch Miller on oboe!), the purists cried sellout, but nothing could be further from the truth. There's a real sense of involvement from Bird on these sides, which collect up all the master takes and also include some live tracks from Carnegie Hall that - judging from the sometimes uneasy murmurings of the crowd - amply illustrate just how weirdly this mixture of bop lines against "legit" arrangements was perceived. The music on this collection is lush, poetic, romantic as hell, and the perfect antidote to a surfeit of jazz records featuring undisciplined blowing. There's a lot of jazz, but there's only one Bird.

This reissue combines a pair of Charlie Parker's most popular recordings, two volumes titled Charlie Parker with Strings, recorded in 1949 and 1950. Unlike most of Parker's other albums, for these sessions he eschewed original tunes and stuck to standards by Cole Porter, the Gershwins, Jimmy McHugh and others, reimagined for a small string ensemble.

Jam Session [Recorded 1952]. Jam Session was compiled from a 1952 jam session which brought together three of history's greatest alto saxophonists; Parker, Johnny Hodges and Benny Carter, as well as Ben Webster and Flip Phillips on tenor sax. Orchestrated by Norman Granz to come as close to an authentic jam session as possible, this is the first of the Jazz at the Philharmonic series. The album includes an original blues tune ("Jam Blues"), a medley of ballads selected by each musician, and a mellow blues tune called "Funky Blues." The standard "What is This Thing Called Love," stands out particularly for its follow-the-leader style ending, with each musician trading fours. Interestingly, the meeting of these three greats, with their widely varying styles, results not in spectacular and fiercely competitive playing, but rather in a slight muting and sense of reserve from all three…

With jazz – lite and trite, near and drear, pretentious and tendentious – seemingly on the increase, the reissue of five “classic” Parker Verve albums (even in truncated form) is to be welcomed. Newcomers (if any exist) to his latter-day recordings as well as devotees (still alive) will find much to enjoy in this Avid compilation.

Bird lives! This graffiti appeared around New York in the wake of Charlie "Bird" Parker's death on March 12, 1955 at th age of 34- and it still holds true today. The alto-sax-giant, one of the originators of Bebop, invented a method of improvising which Jazz musicians still use today. His fluent style, the ornithological sound of his alto, and the many Bop-standards h wrote from "Moose The Mooche" via "Scrapple From the Apple" or "Relaxin at Camarillo" to "Now's the Time" - made hir an icon of modern Jazz. This 10 CD-box-set documents the musical life of "Bird" through his original albums, including man rarities and contemporaries like Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Young, or Thelonious Monk.

Not considering the 24 "with strings" performances, there are 50 other master takes here produced by Norman Granz, ranging from a 1947 Carnegie Hall date to Parker's last in 1954. Many of the cuts here come from 1950-1952. Half of the 1949 sessions are string dates; the rest come from sessions with Kenny Dorham, Tommy Turk, Al Haig, Tommy Potter, and Carlos Vidal. The most rewarding performances here are a reunion of sorts with Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk, along with Curly Russell and Buddy Rich, from April 1950. These tracks are nearly seminal versions of "Mohawk," "Leapfrog," and "Relaxin' with Lee," along with fine reads of "Bloomdido," "An Oscar for Treadwell," and "My Melancholy Baby." Four other cuts come from a brief reunion with Miles Davis and Max Roach in January of 1951 with Teddy Kotick and Walter Bishop, Jr…

One of the founding fathers of bebop, alto saxophonist Charlie Parker (1920-1955) was the most influential modern jazz artist ever. This set presents his finest studio recordings, including the core of his best sessions for the Dial, Savoy and Verve labels, as well as the complete quintet sets from the classic 1953 Massey Hall concert, on which Bird was joined by Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach. Also contained here are the 1950 Bird & Diz date showcasing the two horn legends with Thelonious Monk, and Parker’s celebrated first session with strings, which constituted the saxophonist’s best-selling recording ever.

Charlie Watts, a charter member of the Rolling Stones and an OK jazz drummer, financed a few jazz projects during the 1980s and '90s. This particular set – a tribute to Charlie Parker that features a quintet, vocalist Bernard Fowler (who sings "Lover Man" and adds some narration about Parker's life), six strings, harp, and oboe – has renditions of seven songs associated with Bird. Altoist Peter King is easily the solo star, trumpeter Gerard Presencer is decent but not on the same level, and pianist Brian Lemon also gets in some spots; Watts stays in the background. This well-intentioned program is well worth acquiring and its highlights include versions of "Just Friends," "Dewey Square," and "Perdido."

The genius of Bird and strings is hard to describe – an edgey aproach that really goes far past most other "jazz with strings" projects, not a ballad-driven one, but a tensely strained one that brings out some of Parker's best soloing, almost in a moody soundtrack-type way. The tracks are a lot freer and less bop-driven than some of Bird's normal work, and it's incredible to hear him soloing with such complexity — even more proof of the genius he clearly exhibited in relation to his contemporaries.
