Listening to the Mysterious Shorter SACD in Surround Sound, you'll discover some interesting takes on Shorter's music. As Bob Belden suggests in the liner notes, they've taken some of his upbeat compositions and arranged them to take advantage of the Organ, Guitar, Sax and Trumpet in the group. The SACD also does a fine job of reproducing the performances. It definitely provides a "you are there" level of performance and Chesky's minimalist recording approach with no compression and overdubs offers a nice change of pace from the very compressed sounds we all too often hear in many of today's conventional audio disc releases. Weather Report and Jazz fans will enjoy this one.

In 2016, Macy Gray arrived at The Hirsch Center, a former Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn, to make "Stripped," one of the most unusual and extraordinary albums in her discography. A project put together by the audiophile label Chesky Records, Stripped was recorded in two days with Gray accompanied by guitarist Russell Malone, bassist Daryl Johns, drummer Ari Hoenig, and trumpeter Wallace Roney, all seasoned, well-pedigreed jazz cats. Gray served up remakes of several of her key back catalog titles, including 'I Try' and 'Sweet Baby.' Also included were some new songs, like the infectious 'Annabelle,' and jazzy makeovers of Metallica's 'Nothing Else Matters' and Bob Marley's iconic 'Redemption Song.' With it's pared-back arrangements allowing her inimitable voice to shine, Stripped revealed a side of Macy Gray that had never been heard before."Stripped" was Gray's first jazz album, and it was a commercial success and critically acclaimed. It debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. This re-release will be available on SACD Hybrid Stereo.

Brazilian siren Ana Caram shares this "retro"-spective musical performance in celebration of the brilliant marriage between Brazilian song and America's "cool jazz". The result? Manhattan is an album that captures the dynamic moods of the world's greatest city as interpreted through the supple interplay of this skillful threesome. "Hazeltine, Mraz and Drummond have established an easy chemistry that hinges on their shared sense of time and conversational exchanges within the structure of each song", according to the album's liner notes.

Brazilian singer Rosa Passos meets legendary jazz bassist, Ron Carter. You will now have a front row seat right by Carter's big, woody acoustic bass violin, as he uses his singing sound, big percussive beat and canny harmonic sensibility to complement the bossa nova artistry of the inimatble Rosa Passos.

Jazz vocalist Louise Rogers has been gradually winning over converts with her beautiful burnished tone, clear diction, flawless intonation, and impeccable musicianship. Her natural, unforced delivery harkens back to such pure singers as Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Chris Connor, and Doris Day. And while she may possess considerable technique and a capacity to improvise and scat up a storm like her most significant role model, Ella, Rogers takes a more relaxed and restrained approach on Black Coffee, her fifth recording overall and first for Chesky Records.

At the age of 71, Johnny Frigo finally had his debut as a leader on record, with the exception of an obscure effort in 1957. Although he had spent much of his career as a studio bassist, Frigo successfully switched full-time to his first love, the violin, and was immediately considered one of the top swing-based violinists. Joined by both Bucky and John Pizzarelli on guitars, either Ron Carter or Michael Moore on bass, and drummer Butch Miles, Frigo is in wonderful form on 14 standards, including "Pick Yourself Up," "Detour Ahead" (which he had co-written while with the Soft Winds in the late '40s), "Stompin' at the Savoy" and "The Song Is You". This recommended album launched the Chesky label.
