The Patriarch Choir of the Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow conducted by Ilya Tolkachov devotes the second of their CDs issued by Christophoros to Russian sacred music composed after the 1917 Revolution. Under the Soviet regime, most churches and the majority of monasteries were closed and the priests and monks expelled; ecclesiastical life became extremely difficult and was permanently under threat of reprisal. Numerous celebrated composers of sacred music were only permitted to publish secular compositions, but continued to work in secret.

Art flourished in Habsburg Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries, with its rich and diverse range of works. El Greco and Diego Velásques, the court painter of Philip IV, or Miguel de Cervantes, celebrated as a national poet, were already famous during their lifetime. Their time came to be known as the golden century of Spanish history which also brought forth a lot of wonderful music.

In the early summer of 1630, Venice was struck by the plague in a devastating way: It raged for 18 months and killed almost 50,000 people, more than a third of the population at the time! Doge Nicolò Cantarini vowed to build a large church for the deliverance from the plague, and even though he was unable to experience it himself, this vow was carried out. With the Santa Maria della Salute, one of the most magnificent churches in the city was built.

At the Collegiate Church in Stuttgart, the largest regional church in Württemberg (South Germany), and burial site of the Dukes of Württemberg, who lived in the neighbouring castle, a new organist was appointed in 1652: Philipp Friedrich Böddecker (1607-1683). His Sacra Partitura, a collection of eight motets and two sonatas, was printed in Strasbourg in 1651, when his negotiation with the church council had already begun. These compositions might have been decisive for Böddeckers appointment, particularly as the composer dedicated the collection to the Dukes musical sister, Duchess Sibylla. The music is composed in typical concertante style, but influenced by Italian monody and Monteverdis seconda pratica.

On 19 January 1519 - 500 years ago - Maximilian I, archduke of Austria, German king and Holy Roman emperor (1493–1519) died. With his policies of war and marriage, Emperor Maximilian I laid the foundations upon which the Habsburgs rose to become a great power. In addition to extending his power base, he promoted science and the arts and stylized himself as the ‘last knight’. He founded a court chapel around the composer Heinrich Isaac and gathered the most famous musicians of Europe.

The Ensemble Für Frühe Musik Augsburg is rightly counted among the leading groups for "authentic" medieval music. In their most vivid manners they appeal directly to the listener and show us that "authentic" must not mean antiquated, dusty, or academical. This compilation of the CD releases the ensemble has issued until 1995, is a special listening experience: entertaining, because the pieces are selected and arranged so that the maximum is achieved in variety.

'Herzens-Lieder' [Songs of the Heart] – this title would certainly have appealed to the two librettists and four composers featured upon this CD. In terms of music and church history, they all – Johann Kuhnau, Georg Philipp Telemann, Christoph Graupner and Johann Sebastian Bach – form part of the Lutheran church choir tradition.

Lute music in Germany is closely associated with the name Silvius Leopold Weiss who influenced generations of lutenists with his outstanding compositions and was the cornerstone of German lute music. As his oeuvre has already enjoyed a wide distribution and substantial appreciation, this anthology only touches on a few individual works as reference points and places a greater focus on Weiss’s musical environment and legacy. A particular focus is given to Bayreuth which developed into a regional cultural centre for the lute thanks to the encouragement of the Margravine Wilhelmine, the sister of Frederick the Great.
