The Independents' sophomore album 1973's "Chuck, Helen, Eric, Maurice" featured a personnel change - original member Marvin Yancy replaced by Eric Thomas. While Yancy dropped out of active performing, he continued his working relationship with the group, but this time around in the role of songwriter and producer. Co-produced by Jackson and Yancy, the album seemingly sought to find a balance between past successes and some new directions.

Janet is the fifth studio album by American recording artist Janet Jackson, released on May 18, 1993, by Virgin Records America. Criticism that her success in the music industry was attributed to being a member of the Jackson family and a producer-dependent artist led her to write all lyrics for the album, in addition to co-producing every song and co-writing each of their arrangements with the songwriting/production duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Its title, read "Janet, period.", is meant to disassociate her public image from her family, dropping her surname. While pop and R&B had been standard components in her music, she broadened her compositions by incorporating hip hop, opera, house and jazz, eliminating the rigid, industrial sound of her previous records. The album topped the record charts in the United States, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. In the US, it became the singer's third consecutive album to top the Billboard 200 and her first to debut at number one. Certified sixfold platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, it has sold over seven million copies in the US according to Nielsen SoundScan and an estimated 20 million copies worldwide. It cemented her as an international icon and sex symbol, and is listed by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 200 Definitive Albums of All Time.

Big Apple-based Scepter Records was among the handful of independent labels to have survived the British Invasion of the 1960s. Their longevity was rooted in a solid roster with something for every taste, ranging from the intricate harmonies of R&B vocal girl groups to loose raucous frat rock with practically everything in between. Remarkably, Scepter was not helmed by a business-savvy entrepreneur or a veteran music industry renegade. In fact, a middle-aged suburban housewife and mother was actually behind the scenes calling the shots. At the insistence of her daughter Mary Jane, Florence Greenberg was introduced to four of Mary Jane's mates who had performed in their school's talent show.

''The Sweet Sound of Success is on Scepter'', proclaimed the ads in the Billboard magazine of the 1960s and indeed it was true. The New York-based Scepter label (and its affiliate Wand Records) recorded some of the finest R&B and soul sides and this CD collects together 28 of them. Magical soul names such as Chuck Jackson, Maxine Brown, Jackie Ross, Big Maybelle and Judy Clay. The young Tammi Terrell, under her maiden name of Tammy Montgomery, belting out 1961's It's Mine. Other names less widely known, but still revered on the soul scene - singers like Tommy Hunt (a real Northern Soul fave) and Roscoe Robinson. Among the songwriters, some real class - Holland, Dozier, Holland with Come See About Me, Kenny Gamble with Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers and Ashford, Simpson (later of the mega-successful Ashford & Simpson) & Armstead with Baby Take Me, Keep On Searchin' and One Step At A Time.
