When the Empire Windrush, an old troop-carrier, arrived at Tilbury on June 21, 1948, and inaugurated modern Caribbean immigration to Britain, it also supplied calypso with its best-known image — on Pathe newsreel, Lord Kitchener singing his new composition London Is The Place For Me. Kitch had boarded with Lord Beginner at Kingston docks, Jamaica, on Empire Day, May 24. In London they joined a milieu of fine band musicians familiar with Caribbean musical forms, and already represented on numerous recordings crucial to the development of British swing and jazz music. Travelling with their own core audience, the Trinidadian calypsonians brought with them the vocal music of Carnival. Traditionally this ranges from social satire to sexual double-entendre, from voodoo to the most pressing issues of the day, from sporting events to competitive insult. The experiences of Britain’s growing Caribbean population were to be fabulously rich in raw material.

From Sydney to Mexico City to Paris to Brazil to Berlin - what came to be known as goth here in early-80s London, is arguably one of the UK's greatest cultural exports. The goth aesthetic forged in those tiny west end dives has gone on to inform generation after generation of bands from Nine Inch Nails to Yungblud as well as walking fashion runways for Burberry, McQueen and Galiano and giving Hollywood a whole new dark palette to work with - from Tim Burton's weird cinematic adventures to TV shows as diverse as Buffy The Vampire Slayer and American Horror Story.

All were welcome to pile in, gawp at the hair, ripped, torn, bleached and rubberised fashions, and death-mask make-up and take in the dancefloor’s heady musical mix of beats-heavy post-punk pioneers, outsider icons like Wayne County and The Cramps, and a teetering pile of lusty glam rock singles from the likes of T. Rex and The Sweet.

The Hues Corporation was an American pop and soul trio, formed in Santa Monica, California in 1969. This SACD release includes the #1 chart hit, "Rock The Boat", and the hits "Rockin' Soul", and "Love Corporation". The group named themselves after the business empire of Howard Hues and they recorded some excellent easy listening disco music in the mid-seventies, but they are remembered as a one-hit wonder. The group who may not have been among the most important disco groups, but whose music is definitely worth a listen and a definite addition to all soul lovers.
