Dire Straits released Brothers In Arms in May 1985 and was the band’s fifth studio album, what happened after that was nothing short of a phenomena. It spent nine weeks atop Billboards charts, spawned two massive hits in Walk Of Life and Money For Nothing, the latter fueled by a memorable video on MTV and would garner the group two prestigious Grammy awards. Boasting a total of 30 million copies sold worldwide it would put the band in the center of the media eye and propel them to the world’s largest stages.

An important force in the Los Angeles jazz community, Buddy Collette was an early pioneer at playing jazz on the flute.

The Los Angeles band, seemingly born out of a need for music experimentation and diversity, pride themselves on crafting a sound that draws from the past 60 years of pop music. Comprised of Kurt Stifle (Vocals, Guitar), Steve Reed (Bass), and Bob Lee (Drums), they’re heavily influenced by classic rock icons such as Cheap Trick, Black Flag, and Bob Dylan. Each one of their tracks submerges listeners in a unique journey through musical history, while the band remains grounded in modern experimentation. Their latest album, “The Pilgrims’ Guide to the River of Salvation” is a stylistic voyage of sound, a rock opera that possesses all the camp and humor needed to entertain, while maintaining the musical integrity one would expect from musicians of their caliber.

In 1987, Duke Robillard released the album Swing (Rounder), a successful combination of jazz and jump blues. He got his old friend, tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton to help him out with the recording. Although Robillard is primarily known as a blues guitarist, the record made it obvious that jazz is also deeply rooted in his musical DNA. With Swingin' Again, he revisits the jazz world, and he once again teams up with Hamilton to help him out.

This expansive Box Set contains all 63 of Tony Bennett’s albums in separate facsimile LP jackets, three DVDs, six volumes of Bennett’s non-album singles, a previously unreleased CD of his Las Vegas debut from 1964, and two discs of rarities, including Bennett’s first recording, an Army V-Disc of “St. James Infirmary Blues,” making it an absolute treasure trove for Bennett fans and collectors.

In the song “The Cool School,” Michael Franks asks, “Am I dinosaur? Yeah you bet. I grew up listening to Mose and Chet […] me I attended the Cool School.” In a few short lines he describes what many jazz fans today are feeling: he’s an insider, his influences are hip and classic, a member of a small club, the kind of club that is both impossible to join and to which everyone can belong.

These recordings for the Verve label, most under the direction of Roy’s great champion Norman Granz, began in 1951 soon after Roy’s return to the USA from europe.
