This remastered 2024 edition of Beethoven: Piano Trio No. 7, Op. 97 "Archduke" and Schubert: Piano Trio No. 1, D. 898 & Octet in F Major, D. 803 brings a fresh vibrancy to classic recordings by legendary musicians David Oistrakh, Sviatoslav Knushevitsky, and Lev Oborin.

The new focus on Bohemian classicism in the second half of the 18th century, manifested in recent recordings and articles in professional journals, has amply demonstrated the calibre of these composers and the quality of their music. Among them, Josef Mysliveček enjoyed considerable fame during his lifetime. He was known to such important figures as the soprano Caterina Gabrielli and was a friend of Mozart’s, who esteemed him.

For this their fourth album of music for string orchestra, John Wilson and Sinfonia of London present a programme of works by three composers from the Franco-Belgian school of string pedagogy, who were all themselves virtuosic string players. George Enescu studied in Paris and Vienna, spent much of his life in France, and was internationally lauded as a concert violinist and conductor in both Europe and America.

Consonances Octet is an ensemble created by composer and trumpet player Peter Wallem Anundsen with the goal of combining dense harmonic structures from contemporary classical movements with the spontaneity of jazz and improvisational music. The music explores chambermusical timbres and each musician's distinguished sound to create wholly new soundscapes. Composers such as Olivier Messiaen, Jimmy Giuffre, Caroline Shaw, Anna Webber and Erik Hove are all important figures of inspiration, and the ensemble gathers references from their compositional styles into their own music.

When William Steinberg was appointed music director of the Boston Symphony in 1969 as successor to Erich Leinsdorf, he attained the pinnacle of his career. No previous conductor had headed two top-ten US orchestras simultaneously. It was a condition of his Boston position that he could continue to work in Pittsburgh with the orchestra that he had headed since 1952. Born as Hans Wilhelm Steinberg in Cologne on 1 August 1899, he studied at the local conservatory with the conductor Hermann Abendroth and the pianist Lazzaro Uzielli, a Clara Schumann pupil. On graduating in 1920 he became Otto Klemperer’s assistant at the Cologne opera house.
