Before the Beatles, Cliff Richard was the biggest star of British pop. Sir Cliff Richard is a British institution, one of the biggest-selling pop stars ever in the UK with a popularity that has endured since the 1950s. John Lennon once said that "before Cliff and the Shadows, there had been nothing worth listening to in British music." His good nature has made him a figure of fun for some, but after more than half-a-century in the public eye, Sir Cliff is an English icon to be proud of. This UK only four CD box set, an all-encompassing study of Cliff's early career and arguably his most important period.

This aptly titled collection digs back into the archaeology of Cliff Richard's career to celebrate the seething rock & roll with which he announced his arrival and which kick-started the rocking dreams of an entire generation of British kids. The passage of time and the fictions of history have, between them, conspired to downplay the young Richard's significance rock's revenge for his defection to "family entertainment," once the competition grew too stern. But the fact remains, for four years prior to the emergence of the Beatles, Cliff Richard wasn't simply the biggest rock & roller in the country, he was also the best, and the 16 tracks here capture him at his earth-shattering best.

As a logical follow-up on my Shadows posts I now will post some albums of Cliff Richard and The shadows. On this album you will find a collection of the oldest (mono) recordings of Cliff made around 1959 and at that time The Shadows still were called The Drifters with the later first Shadows members i.e. Jet Harris on bass guitar, Hank B. Marvin on lead guitar, Bruce Welch on rhythm guitar and Tony Meehan on drums.

Cliff Richard Présent dans les hit-parades britanniques depuis six décennies, Cliff Richard est une institution du rock anglais. Né Harry Rodger Webb à Lucknow, en Inde, le 14 octobre 1940, il fait ses débuts dans le rock'n'roll seize ans plus tard avec son premier groupe The Drifters, qui devient The Shadows et collectionne les succès : « Move It », « Livin' Doll », « Bachelor Boy », entre autres. Après un passage en solo, l'idole des jeunes se convertit au christianisme en 1964 et poursuit une carrière multiple de chanteur, acteur et animateur de télévision extrêmement populaire au Royaume-Uni. Doyen du rock britannique en activité depuis 1958, Cliff Richard a logé quatorze chansons au sommet des classements de ventes, dont « We Don't Talk Anymore » (1979) et « Millenium Prayer » (1999). Il continue d'enregistrer des albums entre pop, rock et chansons de Noël. Anobli par la reine Elizabeth II en 2009, Sir Cliff Richard retrouve son groupe historique, The Shadows, pour l'album Reunited. Puis, après un album de blue-eyed soul, Soulicious (2011), le septuagénaire consacre deux volumes au rock'n'roll de sa jeunesse, The Fabulous Rock'N'Roll Songbook (2013) et Just…Fabulous Rock'N'Roll (2016).
