For the last half of the 20th century cobalt-60 units were the mainstay of radiation treatments for cancer. This book describes the development of the first cobalt -60 unit in the United States and the man behind it, Leonard Grimmett. Conceptually conceived before World War II it only became possible because of the development of nuclear reactors during the war. The initial idea was to replace the radium in the contemporary units of the time with cobalt-60, but with the realization that the reactors could produce much more cobalt-60 than originally thought the design of the cobalt-60 unit was drastically changed to take advantage that the application of the inverse square law to cancer radiation treatments would make.

The equalizer and compressor are the elements of this suite that impressed us most — so much so that we decided to base our new product on them. We call it Cobalt.

We sought to give this collection of pieces a unique character through the use of instruments, bows, and strings, each corresponding respectively to the practices of the Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary periods. Each work is imbued with a distinct sound, texture, and color. Through these subtle nuances, we offer a musical journey through time centered around the music of three women who, each in their own way, left a mark on their era: Maddalena Laura Lombardini Sirmen, Fanny Hensel Mendelssohn, and Alicia Terzian.

Cobalt Chapel was formed in late 2014 by London based vocalist and actress Cecilia Fage (Matt Berry & The Maypoles) and Sheffield based musician Jarrod Gosling (I Monster and Regal Worm). Following the recording of their debut album they were asked by Andy Votel to play their first show at this year's Festival No 6. The sounds and textures on this debut are captivating and atmospheric, conjured up from vintage organs and effects, vintage drums and drum machines, fused together with Cecilia's distinctive English lead and layered vocals. The album explores imagined scenarios, finding inspiration in folklore, 1960's and 70's science fiction and horror ('Black Eyes' tells the story from the point of view of a 'Stepford wife' in the original film) as well as personal experience.
