Cold Wave

With their 1998 comeback disc, The Last Wave of Summer – their first album of new material since 1984's Twentieth Century – Aussie rock legends Cold Chisel proved that they still had "the stuff." A tad shy of the standard of their heyday albums of the '70s and '80s, Summer is still formidable rock & roll.

All The Young Droids: Junkshop Synth Pop 1978-1985 is a new compilation that charts the underbelly of the epoch-defining sound of the synthesiser in 80s popular music. Compiled by Philip King (previously seen compiling All The Young Droogs, Glitterbest and Boobs - The Junkshop Glam Discotheque), the music here connects the dots between DIY synth enthusiasts grappling with new, cheap synthesisers at the tail-end of punk and wannabe, jobbing songwriters enthral to the new music pioneered by Gary Numan, Depeche Mode and Daniel Miller’s Mute Records.

One of the more curious characters of the new wave movement, an american singer/guitarist/songwriter Moon Martin issued several critically acclaimed yet commercially underappreciated releases from the late '70s through the early '80s, before reappearing in the mid-'90s.

The book aims to present current knowledge concerning the propagation of electro­ magnetic waves in a homogeneous magnetoplasma for which temperature effects are unimportant. It places roughly equal emphasis on the radio and the . hydromagnetic parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. The dispersion properties of a magnetoplasma are treated as a function both of wave frequency (assumed real) and of ionization density. However, there is little discussion of propagation in a stratified medium, for of collisions is included only which reference may be made to Budden [1] . The effect in so far as this can be done with simplicity. The book describes how pulses are radiated from both small and large antennas embedded in a homogeneous magneto­ plasma. The power density radiated from a type of dipole antenna is studied as a function of direction of radiation in all bands of wave frequency. Input reactance is not treated, but the dependence of radiation resistance on wave frequency is described for the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Also described is the relation between beaming and guidance for Alfven waves.

Bekannt vorkommen wird der Bandname L’Eglise du Mouvement Péristaltique Inversé hierzulande wahrscheinlich wenigen, denn eine zuverlässige Erinnerung ist ein rares Gut, und wirklich angekommen ist das einzige bereits 2002 erschienene Album des französischen Cold Wave-Duos diesseits des Rheins kaum. Für mehr als zwei Jahrzehnte gingen die beiden Mitglieder Charles Pietri (Gitarre) und Nick Grey (Gesang und alles elektronische) musikalisch getrennte Wege, und wer unsere Seiten schon ein paar Jahre liest, hat bei letzterem Namen natürlich ein unmittelbares Déjà-vu und erinnert sich an zwei beeindruckende Alben seines mittlerweile auf Eis gelegten Random Orchestra, über das wir ausführlich mit dem Sänger und Musiker sprachen.

Deze maand brengt het Kopenhaagse kwartet Private Pact zijn tweede langspeler Perfect People uit, en dat op Liberte Records. Hun sound is volgens de persbijlage te omschrijven als een moderne variant op de new en cold wave uit de jaren 80, en er worden namen als Depeche Mode en Joy Division gedropt wat bij mij de nodige interesse wekt Ik had in mijn jonge jaren een new wave-periode en ben sindsdien een fervente liefhebber van deze bands geworden. Dit maar om te zeggen, dat mijn verwachtingen redelijk hoog waren.

Increasingly detached from the original punk formula, the modern and arty youth of the early eighties set itself to jettison an artform that had lost much of the nihilistic and exhilarating energy of its halcyon days, stuck, as it was, in an endless and noisy regression. No Future was the motto of an artform without a cause that no longer echoed with the mindset of the time. Disheartened but eager to experiment and create, a new wave of French musician followed the beacon of Jacno’s seminal 79 hit “Rectangle”, a visionary, digital coup de grâce ,courtesy of a former punk which dealt the Rickenbacker and Fender era a fatal blow. The cold and robot-like bips of analogic keyboards took over. Casio, Korg MS 10, Arp Omni were the new paraphernalia of the növö generation. The ideal conveyers of its retro-futurist elegance and self-professed cold arrogance. They were pinnacles and symbols which turned as potent a fetiche as the electric guitar in the fifties or the laptop in the nineties.BIPP recalls the glory of a selected few. The cream of the crop of the shooting stars and cult band that followed in the footsteps of Kas Product, Mathematiques Modernes or Charles de Goal.
