Sonny Criss plays Cole Porter – and the results are way greater than the sum of the parts – even though those parts are already pretty darn great! Criss' alto sax has a superb tone at this time – razor-sharp, and nicely crisp – yet still filled with warmth that sets it apart from some of his more modern contemporaries – a beautiful balance that really illuminates these tunes, and has you thinking of them as fresh Criss compositions, not older Porter standards. The instrumentation is quite fresh, too – thanks to the addition of Larry Bunker on vibes, which is a really nice surprise – and piano by Sonny Clark and Jimmy Bunn. The great Lawrence Marable plays drums – and titles include "I Love You", "Easy To Love", "Night & Day", and "Love For Sale".

There's something about a Cole Porter Song - the wit, the craftsmanship, the originality - that inspires top-drawer performers to give their upmost. Mainstays in the Great American Songbook, Porter's enchanting, emotionally complex tunes bring out the best in the best.

Following the sold-out run last year of LOVE, LINDA: THE LIFE OF MRS. COLE PORTER, 150 Music presents acclaimed jazz vocalist Stevie Holland on the original cast recording of her new one-woman musical about Linda Porter and her life with husband Cole Porter. LOVE, LINDA tells the story of Linda Lee Thomas, the southern beauty who married, and was a driving force behind legendary songwriter Cole Porter. Though Cole Porter was gay, their love and companionship lasted through 35 years of marriage, and a spectacular, glamour-filled life. Arrangements and Orchestration are by award-winning composer Gary William Friedman, and the book is by Holland and Friedman. The timeless music and lyrics of Cole Porter weave through the compelling narrative of LOVE, LINDA, examining the darker sides of Linda and Cole's life, while also celebrating the deep love that blossomed through the most unconventional of relationships. Backing Stevie Holland is the gifted jazz trio of Landon Knoblock on piano, Peter Brendler on bass, and Jeff Davis on drums. This recording also has select dialogue from the show (but does not contain the complete book to LOVE, LINDA.)

Patricia Barber is absolutely one of a kind. There are any number of jazz vocalists who have good voices, pitch, time, and piano chops; there are others who also sing as if they were looking straight into your eyes. But there is no one who is so consistently iconoclastic, and so deliberately intellectual. Ever since her first CD in 1989, abstract headiness has defined Barber's compositions and delivery; it was the core of her Mythologies release (Blue Note, 2003), a song cycle based on Ovid's "Metamorphoses." Since that project was commissioned by the Guggenheim Foundation, it was necessarily lofty in intent.

French violinist Franck Pourcel is best-known for his jazzy string arrangements of pop hits, as well as his lush easy listening arrangements and film scores. Initially, Pourcel studied classical violin at the Paris Conservatoire, but he found the allure of jazz irresistible. In particular, he was an idol of Stephane Grappelli. Following his studies, he joined a number of jazz combos, which led him to his role as the leader of the French Fiddlers, whom he joined in the late '40s. The French Fiddlers were a group of violinists that performed jazzy versions of classical numbers or classical arrangements of pop and jazz tunes. They signed to Pathe-Marconi and continued to refine their sound so they could reach a broader audience. The group earned their first hit in 1952 with a version of "Blue Tango"…
