A longtime fixture on the French jazz circuit and known for his work during the 60's and 70's opposite Don Cherry, Louis Sclavis and Didier Lockwood among other notables, bassist Henri Texier also had a sideline as a member of France's godhead folk prog merchants Total Issue back in the early 70's and the downy wistfulness and deep sweet soul ache that he nailed during his tenure in the outfit seems to have left a lasting impression, as his three solo missives that followed over the course of the 70's (this being his third) are all suffused with the same sort of profound beatific glow that he established with them. That said, the form of it's manifestation here is rather different from Total Issue's M.O., being principally concentrated on the emotive force of bass and voice, hewn through judicious multi-tracking into luxurious webs of pluck/bow motion through which Texier weaves breezy but emotionally weighty wordless vocalizations to dazzling effect.

This reconstructed Easter Mass consists exclusively of compositions by Praetorius following the Wolfenbüttel Church Constitution of 1569—a document that enables us to experience an Easter Mass in the order and with the parts that it would have celebrated during Praetorius’ term as chapel master. A finely elaborated concept! This album inaugurates the first of 4 albums in a new CPO series entitled Renaissance in the North.

After Stralsund and Danzig, Magdeburg is the third stop on Manfred Cordes' journey through the cities of the Hanseatic League. This stop not only takes him to a city quite far from the sea but also to the earliest period of Protestant church music. Magdeburg introduced the Reformation already in 1524, just seven years after Luther's decisive act. Immediately, the transformation began of what the former monk from Eisleben cherished as a "gift and blessing from God" and saw as an effective means of preaching the Gospel. A genuine "Magdeburg School" emerged, with its representatives cultivating and developing the music of the new faith up until the Thirty Years' War. This program follows that tradition, bringing to life the works of cantors from Martin Agricola to Heinrich Grimm, thus allowing compositions spanning approximately 120 years to resound once more.

On the path to true faith and its practice to please God, there have been regular heated debates over the role of music. Reactionaries repeatedly closed the lid on excessive cheer. This was also the case in the Netherlands of the 17th century. The reformist spirit of the Frenchman John Calvin led to an almost complete ban of music during worship services, despite the fact that the psalms of David ("Sing unto the Lord") provide unassailable proof to the contrary. Shortly before 1600, the great Dutch composer Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck discovered how these psalms could be, and were permitted to be, set to new music. The "Orpheus of Amsterdam" succeeded in transforming imposed restrictions into acoustic wonders. Our small selection of psalms, alternating with several organ works, proves once again the victory of the spirit over heavy subject matter.

Both of the works on this 2024 release by pianist Éric Le Sage, violinist Daishin Kashimoto, and the Schumann Quartet have seen their fortunes rise in recent years as sumptuous late French Romanticism seemed somehow to resonate with the over-the-top luxuries of the present day. There have been several good readings of Chausson's Concerto for piano, violin, and string quartet, a unique work that combines the utmost lushness with considerable art in balancing the various forces involved. The work has attracted some big names, but this one, with Berlin Philharmonic concertmaster rendering the concerto's soaring passionate lines, can stand with any of them.

Yet another Christmas release features the Christmas vocal polyphony of Cristobal de Morales, who is regarded as the first significant Spanish composer of the Renaissance. Like most compositions for this Christian feast, his Christmas motets circulated and were performed throughout Europe, traveling far beyond Spain's borders. His archaic, mystical and expressive musical language, that one almost might term place-less and timeless, must have played a role in this dissemination. Moreover, Morales was active not only in Spanish cathedrals but also spent many years of his creative career as a papal singer in the Sistine Chapel in Rome.

A new era in church music dawned with the creation of German-language sacred songs functioning as the counterpart to Latin Gregorian chant. The WESER-RENAISSANCE ensemble under its experienced conductor Manfred Cordes is now presenting a colourful selection of the most beautiful hymn settings from the Wittenberg first edition of 1524-25. The Urkantor Johann Walter was a close associate of Martin Luther and the founding father of the important institutional and artistic tradition of the Protestant cantorate.
