Paul Graener’s early happy years in London motivated him to gain British citizenship, but it is no secret musicians and musicologists have detoured around his music because of his allegiance with the Nazi Party. His music is anything but nationalistic; it is the work of a late romanticist with a strong inclination toward French impressionism. Having previously released his Piano Trios, cpo now turn their attention to his Orchestral Works, giving his music the recognition it deserves.

Hindemith is among the most significant German composers of his time. His early works are in a late romantic idiom, and he later produced expressionist works, rather in the style of early Arnold Schoenberg, before developing a leaner, contrapuntally complex style in the 1920s. This style has been described as neoclassical, but is very different from the works by Igor Stravinsky labeled with that term, owing more to the contrapuntal language of Bach than the Classical clarity of Mozart.

On this release for CPO is a selection of chamber works by Joseph Marx. His Rhapsody, Scherzo and Ballad may seem like small scale chamber compositions, but they are in actual fact works of symphonic scale. As well as the chamber works, Joseph Marx created many songs that have gone into Austrian music history and gained worldwide fame. CPO will soon be releasing some of these songs in interpretations by the mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirschschlager.

Classical / Romantic / Symphony

In this superb audiophile package of the four symphonies of Robert Schumann, Simon Gaudenz, and the Odense Symphony Orchestra give clear and focused performances that serve to clarify the often-criticized orchestration and to create a nearly chamber-like atmosphere in many passages. By avoiding the conventional homogenous orchestral blend, reducing vibrato in the strings, and emphasizing the distinctive timbres of the woodwinds and brass, Gaudenz brightens Schumann's timbral palette considerably and balances dynamics to make textures more transparent. Beyond this, Gaudenz keeps the tempos fleet and the rhythms spry, and opens up the music to let it breathe.
