Crack The Darkest Sky Open Wide

Jim Deakins is a frontiersman and Indian trader who is making a perilous journey with a group of other men up the Missouri River to get a large haul of furs from friendly Blackfoot Indians. The problem is that they have to get through hostile Indian territory first and they find that they have seriously underestimated the difficulties they will undergo. The large body of men who started the journey are gradually whittled down until only a hardy few, like Deakins, are left.

In 1975 Rolling Stone Magazine named CTS the Best Debut Album of the Year. What followed was a series of snafu's not unusual for the music industry at that time. As a result, Crack the Sky is the best band you've never heard!

This is a very good live album from Crack The Sky, with a bunch of songs I had been waiting a long time to hear played with John Palumbo in the band. There is a fair amount of prog here. "From The Greenhouse", "Nuclear Apathy", "Why Me", "The Art Of Wondering", "Ice", "A Sea Epic", "Mind Baby" and a cover of "I Am The Walrus" all fall squarely in that category, while many other songs have some prog elements, especially in the istrumental sections.

They are one of those bands that deserved more success than they got, but to their credit kept playing in one form or another for many, many years. Alive and Kicking A#@ is an excellent live album featuring most of the original band line up: John Palumbo (guitar/lead vocals), Rick Witkowski (lead guitar/vocals), Joey D'Amico (drums/vocals), Joe Macre (bass/vocals), and Jim Griffiths (guitar/vocals). The show is made up of most of Crack the Sky's most recognizable material and captures their live energy and near-virtuoso playing.

Rare! compiles tracks from four Crack the Sky albums from 1983–1990, two of John Palumbo's solo albums, and previously unreleased live and demo recordings. It was released in 1994 on CD.

This album, after a nine year absence, was a comeback of sorts for Crack The Sky. And it's not a bad effort. Although it does sound as if they are trying too hard to capture the sound of the early records. But now with four guitarists, these guy can blast out some rock!

CTS CD's require more than just passive listening, and a few of them require some multiple spins and downright work on the listener's part as they can be dense, multilayered, intricate and thought-provoking. Nevertheless, they are always rewarding.

On June 6, 2025 Tracy Bonham releases her new album, Sky Too Wide, her first album of original music since 2015. On this album Bonham explores the influences that brought her to music in the first place; classical music. At the same time she integrates those early influences with her quirky alternative rock songwriting style. New songs on this album include Don't Dick Around With My Heart, Dear God Should I Hit Send?, Damn The Sky (For Being Too Wide), Safe With Me, The Uncertain Sun, and more. This album is a culmination of where she was always headed - showing the evolution of a multifaceted artist with a wide range of influences.
