Crank it Out

Dutch-Japanese pianist Tomoko Mukaiyama is a maverick, an artist whose work and personality run against the grain of the expected in terms of repertoire, performance style, and even fashion. The front cover of BVHaast's Tomoko Mukaiyama: Women Composers features a photograph of Mukaiyama's penetrating gaze peering out from underneath a mass of unkempt hair. Many Japanese women are quite fussy about the condition of their hair, and would not allow it to be seen in this way, as though it were "dirty." Mukaiyama dispenses with all such formalities, and likewise this disc is a roller coaster ride of extreme contemporary music in which compromise is unknown – nothing could be further from the familiar, nineteenth century based compilation of feminine composers than this. If there were a category of "punk" in classical music, this would be part of it.

On Summer of 2003, an all-star lineup of the Misfits released the covers album Project 1950, performing renditions of vintage Classic Rock and Roll songs from the 1950s and 1960s. The album featured guest appearances from Ronnie Spector, Jimmy Destri, Ed Manion, and John Cafiero. In October 2014 the album was reissued as expanded edition with a bit different sound.

The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards took place September 9th, in Las Vegas at The Palms. The VMAs aired live that evening at 9:00 p.m. ET on MTV. MTV originally announced that the show would never be reaired in its entirety, but program listings eventually showed that that was not the case, and merely a publicity stunt. Perhaps as a concession that TV viewing audiences for the VMAs were decreasing year over year, the 2007 VMAs were produced on a smaller budget and in front of a smaller crowd. Unlike in past years where the show was filmed in high definition with a 16:9 aspect ratio, the ceremony was filmed in NTSC 4:3, and will likely not be rebroadcast on Viacom's HD channel MHD.
