Carl August Sandburg (1878-1967) was an American poet, historian and folklorist – born in Illinois as the son of Swedish immigrants. In other words – a bridge-builder between the old, Swedish and the new, American tradition and culture. And in this context-a source of inspiration. Not only for the Swedish jazz singer Josefine Cronholm, but also for the American cornettist, Kirk Knuffke, who in this context was the one who brought Sandburg on the pitch.

In some ways, Josefine Cronholm is a Danish equivalent to Cassandra Wilson. She uses folk-oriented songs (all but one number on this set are her originals) as a vehicle to display her voice and to get a message across. Her English is very good and her lyrics are often insightful. Cronholm, who has a strong and appealing voice, is greatly assisted by the Chet Baker-inspired trumpet of Flemming Agerskov and a supportive rhythm section. The selections range from downbeat ballads to more optimistic medium-tempo vamps (à la Dianne Reeves), with the subject matter dealing with love, loneliness, and past regrets. Josefine Cronholm's haunting voice fits the unusual music well.

NEAR THE POND, the new album by American cornetist Kirk Knuffke (born 1980), Swedish bassist/cellist Thommy Andersson (born 1973), and Swedish vocalist Josefine Cronholm (born 1971) explores cross-continental friendships and cultural exchanges in a project inspired by the literary works of Swedish-American author Carl Sandburg.A skilled guitarist and singer as well, Sandburg collected American folk music and it was this advanced musicality that Kirk Knuffke appreciated in his poetry, leading to three of the author’s poems appearing on this recording. Josefine Cronholm was fascinated with Clara Mathilda's fate inspiring new music and lyrics she brought to the project.

Josefine Cronholm (born 1971) is a celebrated Swedish jazz vocalist and singer/songwriter, who has won numerous awards. Her debut album Wild Garden was released in 2002. She also provided a cover of The Carpenters' Close to you for the film MirrorMask. She sang on the Django Bates Album Quiet Nights in 1998.

Multi-instrumentalist Marilyn Mazur began as a child prodigy in the late 1960s and in the early ‘70s she was already leading her own group. Extremely progressive for the times, Zirenes featured Mazur as composer, pianist, voca list and dancer. Other groups followed: Six Winds, MM4 and Primi Band, all with Mazur as the creative epicenter. Mazur was extremely active on the international music scene as a member of Miles Davis’ various bands from 1985, and later toured with an impressive list of artists including Wayne Shorter, Gil Evans and Jan Gabarek. Her own group for many years, Future Song, was also an international attraction.
