Rogers, Jimmy Giuffre (on clarinet, tenor and baritone), pianist Pete Jolly, bassist Curtis Counce and drummer Shelly Manne are the epitome of cool on a well-rounded and consistently interesting set. Highlights including "Isn't It Romantic," "Trickleydidlier," "Not Really The Blues" and Rogers' "hit" "Martians Go Home."

This out-of-print EmArcy LP consists of lengthy versions of "Our Love Is Here to Stay" and an original blues, "Air Conditioning." Trumpeter Maynard Ferguson is heard jamming with an all-star group of West Coast players consisting of altoist Herb Geller, Bob Cooper on tenor, baritonist Bob Gordon, trombonist Milt Bernhart, pianist Claude Williamson, bassist John Simmons and drummer Max Roach. Although the music contains no real surprises, this album has its exciting moments and will be enjoyed by bebop fans.

Reissue with latest remastering. Comes with liner notes. Shorty Rogers courts Count Basie – but he does so in a way that's definitely all his own! The material may have Basie roots, but the overall execution is Shorty at his early 50s best – in a way that makes the album one of his strongest for RCA at the time – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given the great run of records! The lineup is filled with well-chosen players who fall together wonderfully under Shorty's leadership – Buck Clayton, Pete Candoli, and Harry Edison on trumpets – and reed work from Jimmy Giuffre, Bob Cooper, and Bud Shank. The set swings with all the power of the Basie band, yet has all the wonderful arrangements we love from Rogers – and titles include "Basie Eyes", "Doggin Around", "Jump For Me", "Over & Out", and "Walk, Don't Run".

Harold Land is an underrated tenor saxophonist whose tone has hardened with time and whose improvising style after the 1960s became influenced by (but not a copy of) John Coltrane. He grew up in San Diego and started playing tenor when he was 16. After working locally and making his recording debut for Savoy (1949), Land had his first high-profile gig in 1954 when he joined the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet. Land performed and recorded with the group until late 1955 when due to family problems he had to return home to Los Angeles (where he has been based ever since).

The recordings in the present set are typically fluent, compelling De Franco music in a first-class small combo setting. “I never abandoned the idea of being able to experience a somatic feeling in addition to the intellectual experience of modern music. Both are essential. You gotta have both—the cerebral and the feel, the funk. Individually De Franco and Harry “Sweets” Edison blow with the confidence and assertiveness that have become their hallmarks. Kessel takes care of business, lying quietly in the background until it comes his turn to solo, then leaping out to have his say. Jimmy Rowles, Herbie Mann, Bob Hardaway, and the rest of the men playing here are deeply swinging in healthly, mainstream fashion…

One of the hippest albums ever from the team of Harold Land and Bobby Hutcherson – and a set that's even more open than some of their other records on Blue Note or Chess! This set's a bit more electric than some of the other records from the pair – with these drawn-out Fender Rhodes lines from Bill Henderson – who comps and vamps with modal energy that really draws out some searing, searching solos from Land's tenor! Bobby's vibes are maybe a bit more restrained, but offer a key element in the overall soundshape of the record – and the rest of the lineup includes Reggie Johnson on bass, Ndugu and Woody Theus on drums, and Harold Land Jr on additional piano.
